Domestic Violence Awareness Month Proclamation
First up, the Mayor presented a proclamation to Sistercare in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Mark your calendars because the much-anticipated Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence is happening this Saturday, October 5, at Page Ellington Park, located at 2220 Gregg St.. This year, in preparation for the walk, the city’s public relations and marketing department organized several initiatives, including a successful toiletry drive and fun “Sistercare Saturdays” fundraising events.
National Community Planning Month Proclamation
Next, Mayor Rickenmann recognized the local planning and development department with a proclamation for National Community Planning Month. The city’s planning division works tirelessly to engage residents in meaningful discussions about the future of Columbia. Their efforts are crucial for guiding long-term development in both the built and natural environments of our city. Following the proclamations, Latasha Tate, senior director of Statewide Partnerships at Communities in Schools, addressed the City Council. Their mission is to provide students with a support network, keeping them in school and aiding them in achieving their goals. The support from organizations like Communities in Schools is vital for the growth and success of our young people.
Enhancements for Columbia-Richland Fire Department
In the consent agenda portion of the meeting, the council approved several items aimed at helping the Columbia-Richland Fire Department. This included the purchase of new bunker gear for firefighters, ensuring they have the best possible equipment for safety and performance. Additionally, a design contract for replacing the Olympia Fire Station received the green light, with discussions having taken place in earlier sessions.
New Housing Assistance Program Contracts
Affordable housing is a pressing need, and the City Council approved a professional services contract to support the Home Assistance Program.
