News Summary

The Columbia Canal Restoration Project is set to start on March 17, 2023, after a decade of waiting. The $120 million project aims to repair the canal after severe flooding in 2015, restoring vital functions, replacing headgates, and addressing the embankment. A new water supply pump station will also be added to improve resilience. Residents should expect some disruptions during construction. The project timeline extends through 2027.

Exciting Times for Columbia: Canal Restoration Project Kicks Off!

Columbia is buzzing with excitement as the long-awaited Columbia Canal Restoration Project is ready to begin! After a decade of waiting since that infamous “1,000-year-storm” back in 2015, which unleashed a shocking 20 inches of rain and wreaked havoc on our beloved canal, our waterfront is finally set for some serious TLC.

As many residents will recall, that storm not only flooded streets but also created a massive 60-foot hole right in the canal, impacting over 200,000 residents. It’s been a challenging journey for the city, but all that is about to change as we invest a hefty $120 million into clearing up the mess.

Mark Your Calendars: Construction Begins March 17

Get ready for some roadwork! Starting on March 17, access to Riverfront Park and the canal trail will be restricted for about two months as construction crews get to work. For those planning a visit, keep in mind that the only access point open during this initial phase will be the Laurel Street entrance. The north-end parking lot at 1422 River Drive will be closed until May 5.

What’s in Store for the Canal?

This project is not just a simple patch-up; it’s a full-blown project aimed at revitalizing the canal’s vital functions. One crucial item on the agenda is the replacement of all 12 headgates of the canal, which play a vital role in regulating water flow. Currently, there’s only one headgate operational, significantly restricting the canal’s abilities, including its capacity to generate hydroelectric power.

The city is expecting around $100 million in federal funding, which will cover a substantial portion of the restoration project’s budget. The replacement of those headgates alone is projected to cost approximately $12 million, with work slated to start in August 2025. That part is expected to take about 15 months to complete!

Fixing the Breached Canal Embankment

The canal’s embankment isn’t just getting a touch-up either. Authorities plan to tackle 2.5 miles of damaged embankment, which will cost around $60 million. The reconstruction is crucial for the canal’s integrity and functionality, ensuring it can withstand future weather challenges more effectively.

A New Water Supply Pump Station on the Way

Another exciting addition will be the construction of a new drinking water intake and pump station on the Congaree River. This new pump aims to enhance our water supply resilience, boasting a remarkable 80 million gallons of pumping capacity at a cost slightly above $46 million. Talk about a major upgrade!

Overall, the construction phase spread between December 2025 and June 2027 will ensure that the entire canal restoration project reaches it grand finale by December 2027.

Living with Construction: What to Expect

As you can imagine, this large-scale project comes with its share of disruptions. The city is mindful of the impact on residents and park-goers during this extensive construction. Leaders are determined to make this process as smooth as possible while excitingly looking forward to the time when we can all enjoy our revitalized canal without any worries.

So, hang tight, Columbia! Soon enough, our canal will not only be restored but will also be better than ever, ensuring that we can properly harness its resources and beauty for many years to come.
