Back to School in Style: Columbia Gears Up For Exciting Educational and Community Events

School Supply Drive by Cayce Police Department

Columbia, S.C. – Our Local Living segment begins with the Annual School Supply Drive being hosted by the Cayce Police Department. Beginning right away, donations for students in Lexington School District Two can be dropped off at the police department on Lavern Jumper Road.

Residents are encouraged to provide items such as pencils, pens, backpacks, folders, and more. Ensuring every child is equipped with essential tools can be the first step towards a successful academic year.

Back-to-School Bash by Sandhills Medical Foundation

The Sandhills Medical Foundation is also playing its part in preparing students for the upcoming school term via their Back-to-School Bash. The event is set to take place this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the foundation’s office on Baldwin Avenue in Lugoff.

While free school supplies will be provided as long as stock lasts, children must be present to collect these. Besides the schooling essentials, there will also be recreational games, face painting, and popcorn for the entire family to enjoy.

28th Annual Pigskin Poets Event

The spirit of school and community continues with the 28th Pigskin Poets celebration — a much-anticipated annual event where the University of South Carolina’s football team takes a break from practice to promote the joy of reading. Together with Richland Library, the team aims to highlight the importance of summer reading to children of all ages.

This unique and educational event will take place on Friday, July 12th, from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Drew Wellness Center. Be ready to see your favorite football players switch gears from the field to the stage in this exciting narrative showcase.

Ride to End Alzheimer’s

The week’s activities continue with a ride for a cause — the 16th Annual Ride to End Alzheimer’s event, hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association of South Carolina. From July 12th until July 14th, over 400 cyclists will traverse the Midlands and the Palmetto State to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. The officials have reported that so far, they’ve managed to raise more than $832,000 of their $1.5 million goal.

This collective effort shines a light on the urgent need for Alzheimer’s research and support. Everyone is invited to come and cheer on the participants as they pedal towards the fundraising goal. With such outstanding community spirit, we are confident that Columbia can reach and even exceed the target.

Join the Excitement!

As we celebrate community and the anticipation of a new school year, remember to mark your calendars and come out to participate in these events. Together, we make Columbia a strong, supportive community with our children’s bright futures at the heart.
