Columbia Kicks Off Exciting New Initiative to Make Communities Safer!
Hey, Columbia residents! Big news is buzzing in our city! On December 6, the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement launched the “4 Block” Promise initiative, aimed at creating safer and friendlier neighborhoods block by block! It was an event filled with hope and community spirit, held at City Hall, and led by the passionate Director Trevon Fordham. He was joined by our friendly Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, District II Councilman Edward McDowell Jr., and some amazing leaders from local churches.
What is the “4 Block” Promise?
You might be wondering, what exactly is this “4 Block” Promise? Well, it’s a citywide initiative designed to increase community engagement through strategic partnerships with our faith-based organizations. The idea is to focus on the four blocks surrounding each place of worship, enhancing outreach and fostering stronger community ties. It’s all about making our streets safer and our neighborhoods more connected!
The program targets neighborhoods that have faced higher crime rates but is open to all churches and community members across Columbia. So, no matter where you live, there’s a place for you in this promise.
Churches Joining the Movement
As of now, five local churches have boldly stepped forward as partners in this initiative! These churches are:
- Eau Claire Baptist Church
- Gill Creek Baptist Church
- Temple Zion Baptist Church
- Reformation Lutheran Church
- City of Refuge Church
With these committed partners, the hope is that we can kickstart exciting, impactful community engagement events that draw folks together and make a real difference. Who doesn’t love a good community BBQ or a volunteer clean-up day?

But how will this all come together? Over the next three months, the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement has a busy schedule set up. They plan to:

- Conduct asset mapping to figure out community strengths and opportunities.
- Devise tailored engagement and outreach plans.
- Collaborate on safety and engagement efforts.
