COLUMBIA: A Chilly December Surprise Awaits!
Hey there, Columbia! As we kick off December in the Palmetto State, it seems that Mother Nature has decided to bring us a bit of a chill. After a lovely fall, we’re about to feel a cold front making its way through town, and it’s going to be a real shiver-inducing experience!
What’s Coming Our Way?
So, mark your calendars for the early hours of December 3. Rumor has it that we might just be in for a treat – or should we say a frosty surprise? A cold front is rolling into the Midlands, and along with it, some freezing temperatures, and for the adventurous souls, there’s a *slight chance* of snow flurries. Yes, you heard that right!
According to forecaster Chris Landolfi from the National Weather Service’s Columbia office, areas closer to the North Carolina-South Carolina border, specifically Kershaw and Fairfield counties, stand the best chance of catching a few *light flurries*. So if you’re in these parts, keep your eyes peeled. “It’s not expected to accumulate,” Landolfi shared, “but we could see some snowflakes falling late tonight through early Tuesday morning,” specifically in picturesque spots like northern Lancaster and Chesterfield County.
Bundle Up, Columbia!
Now, for those of you in downtown Columbia, don’t get your hopes too high for a winter wonderland. Although it’s looking likely that some of our neighbors will see those lovely little snowflakes swirling around, Columbia itself may not be so fortunate. The chilly temps could drop down to the *mid to upper teens* early tomorrow morning, making it one of the colder nights we’ve seen in quite a while. Brr!
As we roll through December, it’s good to keep in mind that daytime highs won’t escape the *40s*. So if you’re planning on heading out, be sure to throw on an extra layer (or two) to keep the cold at bay!
A Quick Look Back
Now, let’s take a little stroll down memory lane. The last time Columbia experienced what they call *measurable snowfall* – that’s when at least a *tenth of an inch* actually covers the ground – was in January 2022. During that snowy escapade, we collected about 2 inches of the fluffy white stuff. But for nostalgia’s sake, we’ve really got to talk about the big one: the most significant snowstorm this area has ever faced was back in February 1973, when residents along Interstate 20 were treated to a stunning 16 inches of snow! Can you imagine that much snow just outside your door? It must have been a sight to see!
Stay Prepared!
So, Columbia, whether you’re dreaming of a white Christmas or just hoping to see the slightest dusting of snow, it looks like winter is finally starting to show its face. And while we may not be in for a blizzard, a little excitement never hurt anyone, right?
If you’re venturing out and about, be sure to take extra precautions. Drive carefully, bundle up in your coziest winter attire, and make sure to help those who might have difficulties during these chilly hours. We’re all in this together!
That’s all for now! Stay warm and enjoy every bit of this chilly yet charming December surprise happening in our beautiful city of Columbia!
