Bluffton locals can now enjoy a unique ice cream experience as Chill-N Nitrogen Ice Cream opens up shop at 65 Towne Circle, Unit 65. The store offers a distinct take on the traditional ice cream parlor, complete with an unusual ordering system that resembles a periodic table.
Chill-N Nitrogen Ice Cream provides a new way to craft ice cream for its patrons. When ordering, customers choose their base, toppings, and type of cone from a sign that resembles an ice cream version of the periodic table. For instance, ‘Ic’ stands for ice cream, ‘Br’ for brownie, and ‘Cl’ for hot caramel.
The ice cream shop operates until 10 p.m. on weekdays and extends its hours until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Pricing for the ice cream dishes ranges from $6.55 for a small size to $17.89 for a custom-made quart. The store also presents a diverse size range such as small, medium, large, pints, and quarts. Waffle cones are also on offer, with the option of blending them into the ice cream or placing them on top.
The shop serves countless flavor options including seasonal variations made with base options as varied as ice cream, yogurt, tart yogurt, oat, almond coconut milk, and a no sugar added range.
The concept of Chill-N Nitrogen Ice Cream was conceived by owners Derek Cohen and Samantha Cain. The couple noticed a lack of late-night, diverse ice cream options while out mini golfing with their family. Cohen mentioned their choice of Bluffton as a location was due to their residence in the area and a desire to offer the community something new and unique.
According to Cohen, Chill-N distinguishes itself by flash freezing the selected base right in front of the customers. “This results in a fresh product within minutes, without the added preservatives seen in traditional ice creams, a process that leads to a smoother and creamier texture.”
Customers begin their Chill-N encounter by selecting the size and then the base of their dessert. They can proceed to personalize their base with a range of flavors like chocolate, salted caramel, Dulce de leche, and Nutella, among others. The customer can then choose from about 20 different ‘mix-ins’ to complete their creation, which is flash frozen using liquid nitrogen in about three to five minutes, depending on the crowd in the store.
Chill-N Nitrogen Ice Cream currently employs 15 people and expects to expand into the Savannah market next year. Further expansion plans include Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Atlanta markets.
