Hello Columbia! Big news is coming out of our vibrant Five Points neighborhood, where a delicious new addition is on the horizon. A Cocky Rooster chicken restaurant is set to take over the spot that used to be home to both Sushi Yoshi and the beloved Carolina Barber Shop. Get your forks and knives ready, because this is going to be good!
Developer interest is booming in our fair city, and the latest scoop is that A Cocky Rooster is making plans to repurpose the historic buildings at the bustling corner of Devine and Harden streets. They’re looking for special tax credits from the City of Columbia to help on the renovation costs. This could really give the project a boost, and if all goes well, the city’s Design and Development Review Commission is scheduled to make a decision on this on December 19. Fingers crossed!
Now, let’s take a trip down memory lane for a second. The Carolina Barber Shop was a staple here for almost 90 years before it moved to Main Street in the Arcade Mall. It’s hard to believe that the old barbershop is gone, but at least it has found a new home! Meanwhile, the location where Sushi Yoshi used to serve up mouthwatering sushi closed its doors back in 2021. With Cocky Rooster moving in, this corner will soon be buzzing with activity once again.
Plans for the new chicken restaurant will include knocking down a wall between the two buildings, creating a spacious dining area. Old-school vibes are all the rage, and in that spirit, the developers will remove a retro tile ceiling, revealing the original ceilings from the 1930s hidden beneath. How cool is that?
So, what can we expect from A Cocky Rooster? This Virginia-based chain, which started in 2020, specializes in scrumptious chicken wings that will keep you coming back for more. With an expected opening time of 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, it’s perfect for both lunch breaks and late-night outings! This will be their first location in South Carolina, adding to two existing locations in Virginia and a soon-to-open spot in Florida.
As a local, it’s thrilling to see new growth and development in Columbia! This new chicken spot will not only provide delicious meals but will also act as another venue to hang out, mingle, and build community. So whether you are planning a casual dinner or a late-night snack after a night out, the Cocky Rooster will have you covered.
We’ll keep our eyes peeled on the progress of this exciting project, and we can’t wait to see how it transforms the neighborhood. As always, stay tuned for more updates as we count down to the grand opening day!
Happy eating, Columbia!
