Celebrating Joseph Bell: Pine Grove Elementary’s Teacher of the Year

Columbia, South Carolina – Every student holds the potential to achieve great things, and one special teacher in our community is helping turn that potential into reality. Meet Joseph Bell, a dedicated educator at Pine Grove Elementary School, who has recently been named Richland One’s 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year. His journey to this distinguished title is as inspiring as it is unconventional.

A Teacher at Heart

Joseph, who hails from the quaint town of Salley, has always had a calling to teach. Growing up, he would mimic his uncle and cousins who were teachers themselves. But instead of going straight into the classroom after high school, he took a unique route. He began his career working at child development centers, spending six formative years engaging with young learners. It was during his time as a pre-kindergarten teacher at the Center for Learning in Columbia that he stumbled upon an opportunity that would change his life.

One day, Joseph crossed paths with a caring parent who was working as a school counselor in Richland One. He expressed his desire for something new, and she immediately thought of an open substitute teaching position. “It felt like a sign when I toured the school. I just knew Richland One was where I needed to be,” Joseph shared with a smile.

Growing as an Educator

Joseph kicked off his journey with a long-term substitute role at Arden Elementary School in 2019. It didn’t take long for him to earn his bachelor’s degree from Western Governors University in 2021 and his teaching certification shortly after. He became a third-grade teacher at Pine Grove in the 2022-2023 school year and has continued to grow, shifting with his class to fourth grade before taking on a new challenge as a second-grade AAP teacher this year.

“I love challenges and trying new things. Stepping into second grade this year will really broaden my teaching experience,” he expressed eagerly. His enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and it shows—a favorite highlight for him is when students excitedly tell their families about new skills they’ve picked up in class, especially in math.

Creative Teaching Techniques

Joseph doesn’t stick to conventional teaching methods. He’s known for thinking outside the box. Last school year, he had his fourth graders team up to create podcast episodes focused on English language arts strategies. “It was fantastic to see them bring their creativity to academic topics. They shared their work with other students, and you could feel the excitement in the air,” he recalled.

Building Strong Role Models

Another key aspect of Joseph’s work is mentoring—not just academically, but also socially. He’s made it his mission to ensure that Pine Grove students see strong, positive male role models. As the organizer of the “Real Men Read” event, he invites male volunteers from the community to engage in reading sessions with students. This not only strengthens literacy but also showcases successful men they can look up to.

“Many young boys, especially in elementary education, don’t see many male figures. It’s important for them to have those influences,” Joseph emphasized. He is also the advisor for the Premier Pandas, a mentoring program for male students, teaching them skills like dressing appropriately, managing emotions, and dealing with conflicts peacefully. “Many boys don’t know how to express their feelings without resorting to anger. I’m teaching them how to communicate and cope in healthier ways,” he articulated passionately.

More Than Just a Teacher

What sets Joseph apart is his ability to connect with his students. He’s not just a figure in the classroom; he’s also a friend. “I’m outside tossing a football with them or joining in a game of hopscotch. It’s about building trust and showing them that I care,” he said heartily.

The Future Looks Bright

As he embarks on yet another exciting academic year, Joseph is stepping into a leadership role as the second-grade team lead at Pine Grove. Furthermore, he is on track to earn his master’s degree in education administration from the University of South Carolina in December. “We’re like family here at Pine Grove. We support each other, laugh, and strive to do our best for the kids,” he said, beaming with pride.

It’s educators like Joseph Bell who underline the essential role teachers play in shaping our future. His dedication, creativity, and commitment to his students are indeed what makes a brighter tomorrow for our children and our community.
