Cayce Appoints Herbert Blake as New Police Chief, Emphasizing Community Engagement and Collaboration

Cayce Welcomes New Police Chief Herbert Blake

Cayce, SC – The City of Cayce has officially welcomed its new Police Chief, Herbert Blake, marking a new chapter for the local police department. Chief Blake takes over the role from Chris Cowan, who stepped down in July to join the University of South Carolina’s School of Law. The transition was celebrated in a recent press conference where Blake shared his vision for the police department and the community.

A Vision of Servitude and Community Engagement

During the press conference, Chief Blake expressed his desire to build on the achievements of those who came before him. “I look forward to trying to improve on all the accomplishments my predecessors have accomplished,” he said. His focus is clearly on unity, noting the importance of being a teacher and counselor to both police staff and the community.

“I want to empower, encourage, and elevate the department’s efforts,” Blake added, emphasizing the significance of open communication with both city departments and the citizens of Cayce. He plans to establish listening sessions organized by district councilmen, allowing residents to voice their concerns and priorities regarding community safety.

Experience to Lead the Charge

Bringing with him over 20 years of law enforcement experience, Chief Blake’s journey in policing began as an officer in Ridgeland, SC. He ascended to serve as the Police Chief of both Hendersonville and Loris Police Departments before becoming the Chief Deputy of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office in Asheville, NC. This wealth of experience positions him well to guide Cayce’s police force into a new era.

Jim Crosland, the Interim City Manager, spoke highly of Blake, describing him as someone with a “true servant’s heart.” During their first meeting, Crosland shared, “You could tell he has a true servant’s heart and he just wants to serve our community.” It’s this humility and desire to be a supportive leader that residents can look forward to as Blake takes the reins.

Family Roots in the Community

Chief Blake and his wife, Linda, are not just focused on work—they are family-oriented too! They have two children and five grandchildren, all of whom attend schools throughout Richland County. When asked about his new role and the community, Blake said, “It’s an absolute pleasure to be in a city of this size and proximity, with the goals and objectives that I think is going to move this community forward in a very positive way.”

Looking Ahead

As Chief Blake settles into his new role, community members are eager to see how his leadership will shape the Cayce Police Department. The emphasis on outreach, communication, and collaboration could change the dynamics of police-community relations for the better.

In the coming weeks, residents can expect announcements about the planned listening sessions and other initiatives aimed at increasing engagement between police officers and the community they serve. Chief Blake’s approach might just be the refresh that Cayce needs as it moves forward, creating an even stronger bond between law enforcement and the community it protects.

With his commitment and experience, Chief Herbert Blake is poised to lead Cayce into a bright and collaborative future. Residents are encouraged to stay involved and engage with the new chief as he embarks on this important journey.
