The Cayce Fire Department has been awarded a vital grant for $32,067 by the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and the local Firehouse Subs restaurant in Cayce. According to officials, these funds will be instrumental in purchasing 9 new sets of turnout gear essential for fire fighting operations.
The Fire Department emphasized that a firefighter’s turnout gear is their preliminary line of protection in fire combat. The frequency of call responses and training exercises can lead to rapid wear-and-tear of the gear, often resulting in the degradation of its protective qualities.
For this reason, fire departments typically distribute two sets of gear to their firefighters. The two sets enable one to be used in operations while the other is being cleaned and dried. Given that much of the material within burning structures can be carcinogenic, maintaining clean and protective gear is crucial for firefighter health and safety.
The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has a history of supporting frontline workers since its conception in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina. Founders and former firefighters, Chris Sorensen and Robin Sorensen, felt driven to provide more assistance after their experiences feeding first responders and survivors in Mississippi. It’s these actions that sparked the creation of the Foundation.
This grant award marks another crucial step in facilitating the health and safety of Cayce’s firefighting crew. By equipping local heroes with the gear they need to tackle their frontline duties effectively and safely, both the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and the local Firehouse Subs restaurant demonstrate their unwavering commitment to the community’s wellbeing.
