Cayce City Council Advances Redistricting and Emergency Services

News Summary

The Cayce City Council is moving forward with plans to redistrict voting areas in response to new census data, ensuring fair representation for residents. Additionally, the council has approved the purchase of a new fire engine for the Cayce Fire Department, aimed at enhancing emergency response capabilities. As these developments unfold, the community is encouraged to engage in the process and stay informed about local improvements.

Cayce City Council Moves Forward with Exciting Developments

In the vibrant city of Cayce, leaders are hard at work responding to the challenges and opportunities of growing communities. The city council is ramping up efforts to address the need for redistricting in the wake of new population data from the U.S. Census Bureau. With the city expanding, it’s crucial to ensure that every resident is represented fairly and evenly.

Redistricting Plans Underway

As part of the redistricting process, the Cayce City Council is set on remapping voting districts to reflect the changes in population revealed by recent census data. The council knows they must work closely with the South Carolina Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office to get this right. An important rule is that the population in the new districts needs to stay within 5 percent of each other to maintain fair representation.

Among the anticipated changes, districts two and four will see significant shifts in both their physical size and shape. These changes come as Councilman Phil Carter stresses the importance of moving forward with redistricting, even after the delays from the 2020 census data. The council has already voted to advance to the next phase of this process, which will include gathering input from residents. A potential vote on the newly redrawn voting districts could happen at the next council meeting scheduled for March 5th.

New Fire Engine for the Cayce Fire Department

Cayce Fire Department. The department’s chief highlighted how this new engine would significantly boost their ability to serve the community and respond to emergencies effectively.

The fire engine in question is a shiny 2024 Pierce Enforcer, and the decision to acquire it stems from concerns about the aging fleet of fire trucks currently in use. A typical fire truck can take two to three years for delivery, but to ensure quicker availability, Cayce plans to make the purchase within-state, expediting the process after finalizing the deal.

Lexington County Council Update

Lexington County, there’s been some political shuffling as well. In the GOP primary, Councilman Todd Cullum is enjoying a solid lead of 50 percentage points over his opponent Bobby Porter for District 9. Cullum, a seasoned council member, has been on the county council for two decades and has previously held the title of chairman.

This primary election is particularly noteworthy as it marks Porter’s second defeat in two years, following a prior loss to.current Councilman Gene “Bimbo” Jones in 2020. With Cullum now unopposed for the upcoming November election, along with three other candidates seeking office this year, Lexington County looks poised for continuity in its leadership.

Wrap-up

As Cayce moves forward, it’s clear that the community is not just growing in size, but it’s also enhancing its infrastructure and services to keep pace with all the exciting changes!
