Columbia’s $2 Billion Carolina Crossroads Project Begins

Construction work for Carolina Crossroads Project in Columbia

News Summary

Columbia, South Carolina, is set for a transformative upgrade with the $2 billion Carolina Crossroads project aimed at improving traffic flow in the notorious Malfunction Junction. The South Carolina Department of Transportation has commenced preliminary work on the major overhaul, which will encompass significant safety and capacity enhancements along a 14-mile stretch. While the main reconstruction is expected to begin in 2030, early phases of the project are targeted for completion by Spring 2025, with plans for modern interchange designs to facilitate future growth in the region.

Columbia’s Big Change: The $2 Billion Carolina Crossroads Project Takes Off!

Columbia, South Carolina, is gearing up for a monumental transformation that will change the way drivers navigate the city. You might have heard about it already—yes, that’s right, we’re talking about the Carolina Crossroads project. This ambitious plan, estimated at a whopping $2 billion, is going to overhaul the notoriously jammed area known as ‘Malfunction Junction.’

What’s All the Fuss About?

For those who may not be familiar, Malfunction Junction refers to the tricky intersection of Interstates 20, 26, and 126. If you’ve ever found yourself sitting in traffic in this area, you’re certainly not alone. Every single day, approximately 134,000 vehicles travel through here, and the goal of this project is to improve safety and ease that frustrating congestion.

So, what exactly is happening? The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has kicked off the first steps of this giant operation, which will stretch over 14 miles. As part of the preparations, crews have already started clearing out trees and vegetation on a sizable 170 acres along I-26, specifically between Bush River and Beatty roads. Imagine that: heavy machinery buzzing around, all while traffic continues to flow. The best part? No major road closures are on the horizon—though you might see some overnight lane closures, drivers are encouraged to plan ahead!

Phases, Progress, and What to Expect

Now, if you’re wondering when the real reconstruction will kick in, hold your horses! The first phase of the interchange reconstruction is not slated to begin until 2030. Until then, there will be lots of prep work happening behind the scenes. However, for those eager to see some progress sooner rather than later, Phases 1 and 2 are expected to wrap up by Spring 2025.

Previously, it was expected that Phase 1 would be completed in late 2024, with Phase 2 following closely behind in early 2025, so it looks like they are mostly sticking to schedule!

Here’s What’s Already Done

As of January 2025, several tasks have already crossed the finish line:

  • All travel lanes and ramps at Colonial Life Boulevard are open in their final positions.
  • The eastbound bridge on Broad River Road at I-20 is finished and ready for use.
  • A brand new bridge from Broad River Road to I-20 westbound is complete and operational.
  • Asphalt paving at Colonial Life Arena is set to be finished this coming Spring.
  • A shiny new exit ramp from I-20 West to I-26 West is scheduled to open by January 9, 2025.

Heads up though, as the existing exit ramp at the I-26 interchange will be permanently closed, so stay informed.

Modern Upgrades Coming Your Way

This project isn’t just about fixing what’s broken; it’s about bringing the junction into the modern age! The plan includes replacing those clunky cloverleaf loops with sleek, modern interchange designs, featuring South Carolina’s very first turbine-style interchange. Exciting stuff!

You’ll also see traffic lanes on I-26 being expanded to a minimum of four lanes across eight miles, which is crucial considering the Midlands is expected to experience a population growth of 70% by 2040.

Looking Ahead

The SCDOT isn’t stopping here. Phase 3 has been cleverly divided into five subphases to better handle underground utility risks and to improve cost efficiency. The project will yield over 40 new bridges and enhancements to multiple interchanges—talk about a major upgrade for Columbia!

As you can imagine, constructing all this will lead to increased traffic congestion in the area and expected delays as work continues. The SCDOT is keeping the public in the loop with ongoing informational meetings, and they encourage everyone to stay tuned via their project website.

Columbia, get ready for a smoother ride ahead! It may take some time, but when it’s all said and done, the Carolina Crossroads project aims to make life a whole lot easier for drivers in the Palmetto State.
