West Columbia’s Capitol Square to Undergo Major Redevelopment Sparked by Community Enthusiasm

Exciting Changes Ahead for West Columbia’s Capitol Square

West Columbia is buzzing with enthusiasm as the planning commission has approved an ambitious redevelopment plan for the Capitol Square shopping center. This area, which has represented local business and community spirit for many years, is about to embrace some big changes that promise to reshape the landscape and enhance the lifestyle of its residents.

A New Vision for Capitol Square

Once home to the beloved Jin Jin Chinese Restaurant, which closed its doors last December, this 13-acre site is set to make way for a vibrant and mixed-use community. Local developer Baker Commercial Properties has shared plans for a newly designed space that will include a four-story residential complex boasting 224 units, along with a 27,000-square-foot grocery store to cater to the community’s shopping needs. There will also be additional retail and office spaces, making this a hub of activity for both residents and business owners alike.

Prioritizing Walkability and Green Spaces

What sets this redevelopment apart is its thoughtful design, which focuses on creating a pedestrian-friendly environment. Plans include public green spaces where families can gather and enjoy the outdoors. It’s all about making the area more inviting and accessible, encouraging folks to walk and explore the new and existing shops and restaurants, and connecting the revitalized section with areas of the growing River District.

Addressing Parking Concerns

A big concern for many locals was whether there would be enough parking to accommodate both new businesses and popular spots like D’s Wings and Savage Craft Ale Works. The great news is that the plans include a 171-space public parking lot along with additional off-street parking spots ranging from 550 to 645. This should ease some concerns while supporting both new and existing establishments.

The Surrounding Environment

Capitol Square sits just across from the House of Raeford chicken plant, a location that’s garnered its share of complaints over the years. While discussions have taken place about potentially relocating the plant, as of now, it remains operational and will be a neighbor to this new development. Residents can expect some measures to improve safety in the area, including newly added crosswalks designed to slow traffic on Meeting Street, making it safer for pedestrians as they navigate their way across the road.

A Trend of Revitalization

The revitalization of Capitol Square is part of a larger wave of change occurring in West Columbia. Plans are underway for a long-awaited pedestrian bridge over the Saluda River, coupled with ongoing improvements along Highway 1. With nearby restaurants like Al’s Upstairs closing after 44 years and the recent change of ownership for Eggroll Station, there is an undeniable momentum toward transformation in this charming city.

Next Steps for Progress

Before construction kicks off, key aspects of this project will still need to be rubber-stamped by the West Columbia City Council. This includes zoning changes and a possible partial road closure. Should these hurdles be cleared, the Capitol Square redevelopment will stand as a testament to the growing potential and revitalization efforts in West Columbia.

As these plans unfold, it’s clear that the community is gearing up for an exciting new chapter. Residents can look forward to enhanced amenities and connections that will make West Columbia an even more wonderful place to live, work, and play!
