Capitol Shopping Center in West Columbia Set for Major Redevelopment Project

Exciting Development on the Horizon for West Columbia

Greetings from West Columbia, South Carolina! If you live here or might find yourself visiting, we have some thrilling news to share. A major transformation is about to unfold right in the heart of our lovely city. The Capitol Shopping Center, which has sadly sat vacant for some time now, is all set for a new life. That’s right, folks—it’s redevelopment time!

What’s in Store?

According to our friendly Mayor, Tem Miles, the development was put on hold for quite a while. The owners, Baker and Baker, have been holding on to this property for over a decade, waiting for just the right moment to make their move. Well, it seems like that moment is finally here! Last week, the city officials gave a thumbs-up to the Capitol Square redevelopment project.

So, what can we expect from this new project? Well, the plans are quite exciting. Picture this: a four-story building that houses 224 multi-family units along with 18,000 square feet of space designated for retail or office use. Sounds fantastic, right? This area is conveniently located on Sunset Boulevard, just a stone’s throw away from the House of Raeford chicken plant, which is a well-known landmark in West Columbia.

Connecting the Community

Mayor Miles expressed his enthusiasm about how this project will fit into the larger picture of West Columbia’s development. “We’re currently in the process of reworking our entire Meeting Street, which runs behind this area,” he stated. This development is poised to be the perfect bridge between Highway 378 and Meeting Street, helping to tie everything together. It’s all about creating a warm and inviting community space that flows seamlessly!

More to Love

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the plans include public parking and, wait for it—a grocery store! Yes, you read that right. Alongside that, there will be retail outparcels to support small local business owners, as well as some nationally known retail brands. This is exactly what many folks in West Columbia have been asking for—more grocery stores and shopping options.

“Folks in West Columbia have been very keen on receiving additional grocery stores and retail, and this project is delivering on that request,” Mayor Miles said cheerfully. It’s evident that the community’s needs are at the forefront of this project.

Planning for the Future

Although the city has approved the redevelopment and excitement is in the air, there is still no official start or completion date just yet. City officials are diligently working on ensuring that this project incorporates pedestrian-friendly pathways and lush landscaping to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal.

With the aim to provide ample public parking, the city is committed to ensuring that everyone will have easy access as the area develops.

Your Thoughts?

How do you feel about this exciting project? Whether you’re a longtime resident or considering making West Columbia your new home, this redevelopment offers a bright future full of opportunities. Stay tuned for updates, and let’s look forward to seeing our community flourish!

This next chapter in West Columbia’s story is bound to be a game-changer, and we can’t wait to watch it unfold.
