Columbia is buzzing with news as one of the tallest buildings in the city, the Capitol Center, gears up for a major transformation! The Charter Institute at Erskine is leaving its cozy third-floor perch to take over the entire 25th floor of this iconic building located at 1201 Main St. This move marks a significant expansion for the institute, which has become a pivotal player in South Carolina’s education landscape.
A Bright New Future for Erskine College’s Charter Institute
For those who might not be familiar, the Charter Institute at Erskine is responsible for overseeing charter schools across the state. This change comes with a hefty price tag of $280,000 earmarked for renovations, as city permits detail a comprehensive upgrade for their new office space. With plans for 23 new offices, two stylish conference rooms, and even two break rooms, this space is set to provide a modern working environment for the growing team.
“As one of the largest school districts in South Carolina, we’ve needed to expand our office space for some time,” shared school spokesperson Ashley Epperson. This revelation hints at the increasing demand for charter schools and the growing number of the children they serve. It’s a clear sign that education in the state is on the upswing!
From Elegance to Education
Now, you might be wondering what’s happening to the space left behind. The 25th floor previously held the esteemed Capital City Club, a private members-only venue that gracefully occupied the site since shortly after the building was completed back in 1988. Sadly, the club closed its doors in February 2024, as operations became unmanageable “in this post-COVID environment.”
With the transformation of the space, the institute will also manage an event and conference area on the 25th floor. This opens up exciting possibilities for conferences and gatherings against the backdrop of beautiful views overlooking the State House and downtown Columbia.

It’s important to note that the funding for these renovations will not come from any taxpayer money allocated to the institute. Every penny of the $280,000 will come from their own funds, showcasing their commitment to growth and sustainability.
The 25th floor is strategically located at the corner of Assembly and Gervais streets, nestled among the hustle and bustle of state agencies, law firms, and even Aflac insurance, not to mention the well-known Truist bank that has its signage proudly displayed atop the structure.
