Bret Bell Hired as Tybee Island’s City Manager
Following a year-long search after the resignation of previous city manager Shawn Gillen, Tybee Island City Council recently announced the appointment of Bret Bell, the current chief of information and public affairs for the City of Savannah, as the city’s new manager. This appointment comes after a meticulous search process facilitated by consulting and public accounting firm, Baker-Tilly.
A Love for Tybee Island
Bell, who lived in Tybee Island since moving to the area in 2000, expressed a deep fondness for the island and the potential for growth and development within the city. He referenced his past residency in the city and his love for the island as key factors that drew him to the position. Eyeing a fresh challenge after a solid 18-year tenure with the City of Savannah, Bell felt that the city manager position at Tybee Island allowed him to combine his love for the island and his desire for new professional challenges.
Background and Experience
Bell’s career in public administration began in 2006 as the public information director for the City of Savannah. His initial role included managing external communications, branding, and media marketing for the city. He subsequently transitioned into assisting the city manager, followed by a role as the chief operating officer where he had a hand in managing the city’s internal and administrative functions. As the chief of information and public affairs, Bell played an instrumental role in the city’s Smart City Initiative, focusing on data-driven operational efficiencies.
Contract and Future Plans
According to the agreement approved by Tybee Island City Council, Bell will begin his tenure as city manager on September 3, with an annual salary of $165,000. He plans to spend the initial months engaging with city organizations, citizens, and leaders to understand their vision for the community and develop work programs that align with their goals. Bell emphasized his commitment to leading Tybee Island into a bright future and expressed excitement over the opportunities this new role will bring.
