The Blessing Box initiative, which started in Charleston, has extended its reach to other areas including Bluffton, Okatie, and Hardeeville. These weatherproof boxes, often cutely adorned, are strategically placed in public spaces and are filled with non-perishable food and other essential items. The initiative operates under the slogan, “Take what you need, leave what you can.”

The boxes are accessible to everyone, with no questions asked. This ensures that those who might hesitate to ask for help can easily tap into the resources without feeling stigmatized or embarrassed. “We just really need the community support to keep these boxes full, because they’re being emptied on a daily basis,” said Straughn, adding that “There’s no reason a child should go to bed hungry.”
