Bluffton S.C.—A local woman is rallying community support for “Blessings in a Box,” a project that offers support for those in need.
The Blessing Box initiative, which started in Charleston, has extended its reach to other areas including Bluffton, Okatie, and Hardeeville. These weatherproof boxes, often cutely adorned, are strategically placed in public spaces and are filled with non-perishable food and other essential items. The initiative operates under the slogan, “Take what you need, leave what you can.”
The boxes are accessible to everyone, with no questions asked. This ensures that those who might hesitate to ask for help can easily tap into the resources without feeling stigmatized or embarrassed. A simple concept that’s providing an invaluable service for those that need it most in the community.
Kathy Straughn, the founder of Blessing Box Project Bluffton, highlights that the project’s success depends solely on community support. Straughn mentions that the boxes are depleted on a daily basis, underlining the significance of continued community participation.
“We just really need the community support to keep these boxes full, because they’re being emptied on a daily basis,” said Straughn, adding that “There’s no reason a child should go to bed hungry.”
Volunteers play a crucial role in maintaining the boxes by cleaning, organizing, and restocking them regularly. Whether you’re an individual looking to donate or a local business wanting to give back, every little contribution makes a difference.
Non-perishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, and cereal are always appreciated. Supporters can also follow or reach out to The Blessing Box Project Bluffton on their Facebook page or contact Kathy Straughn via email at blessingboxbluffton@icloud.com.
