Bluffton Prioritizes Permits for Tropical Storm Debby Recovery

In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby, the Town of Bluffton prioritizes storm recovery permits at no cost to residents. The move aims to assist homeowners who need emergency permits for repairs or to document damage from the August 5th storm.

Documentation is Vital for Insurance Claims

According to the town’s Chief Building Official, Rob Currall, documenting the damage is crucial for supporting future insurance claims. Much like car insurance claims, this allows future insurance consideration in case repeated weather incidents cause similar damage.

Basic Guidelines for Emergency Permits

A few fundamental guidelines outline the emergency permit process. It’s important to note that a permit is not needed for debris removal or minor repairs to prevent further property damage or personal injury. Moreover, “like for like” replacements caused by storm damage do not require a permit. Additionally, minor water leak repairs that don’t involve structural, mechanical, or electrical systems are free from permit requirements. The town charges no fees for emergency permits.

Duration and Special Requirements

Emergency permitting is effective for 30 business days, although the town may either extend or rescind this period as needed. Further stipulations apply to those who reside adjacent to a Highway Corridor (including Hwy. 46, 170, 278, or May River Road) or in the Bluffton Historic District. Such homeowners need to provide pre-disaster photographs while applying for a permit. These areas are subject to specific rules, regulations, and codes pertaining to repairs.

Structural Damage Documentation

If your property sustained structural damage during the storm, please take photographs of the damage for assessment. Each case is considered individually.
