Bluffton Rotary Announces 2024 Grant and Scholarship Recipients

Bluffton, SC – In a significant display of local philanthropy, the Rotary Club of Bluffton has disclosed the recipients of its grants and scholarships for the latter half of 2024.

Awarded Grants

The grant beneficiaries this year include Meals on Wheels, Bluffton Self Help, SOAR (Special Olympics and Recreation), which will utilize its grant for bus repair and driver costs, and SCNRI (South Carolina Nurse Retention Initiative) which plans to hire a nurse with an associate’s degree.

The Rotary Club evaluates numerous grant applications annually and awards selected organizations twice a year. All grantees undertake charitable activities dedicated to improving the local community manifolds.

Scholarship Recipients

On the educational front, scholarships have been dispensed to three deserving students. Riley Burkhart from Bluffton High School and Caleb Winget from Hilton Head Christian Academy are set to begin their educational journey at Clemson University. Meanwhile, Kristen Claffy from May River High School will head to the University of South Carolina to further her studies.

The Rotary Club, founded in 1988, hosts influential speakers and recognizes exceptional students from local schools. It is a part of a global network of more than 46,000 Clubs, featuring over 1.4 million members dedicated to implementing sustainable projects for environmental and community enhancement.

Hampton Regional Medical Center Welcomes New Surgeon

Varnville, SC – The Hampton Regional Medical Center is set to broaden its skilled roster with their newest addition, Dr. Mark Wikenheiser, an orthopedic surgeon with over 30 years of experience.

Having graduated from North Dakota State University/Meritcare Hospital Consortium in 1988, Dr. Wikenheiser served his residency and internship at The Mayo Clinic Health System. Wikenheiser intends to offer a personalized, hometown approach to care in the Lowcountry region, catering to fractures, sports medicine, and joint replacements.

Allendale Hospital Opens Specialized Wound Care Treatment Center

Fairfax, SC – In pursuit of dedicated outpatient services for patients with hard-to-heal wounds, Allendale County Hospital inaugurated the Allendale County Hospital Advanced Wound Care. Here, patients will receive custom care plans devised by a trained team of doctors, nurse practitioners, and technicians to facilitate optimal healing.

USC Salkehatchie Appoints New Associate Dean

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie has made an appointment in its senior management tier, naming Dr. Sarah Miller as the new associate dean for academic and student affairs.

Dr. Miller joined USC Salkehatchie in 2006 and has been strongly involved in multiple facets of the campus and surrounding communities, with numerous accolades to her name. As the new associate dean, she is eager to execute her role by continuing to advance the mission of USC Salkehatchie.
