Bluffton Offers Priority Permitting for Tropical Storm Debby Recovery
The Town of Bluffton has announced that it is priority processing permits at no charge for residents who are in need of repairs following Tropical Storm Debby, which caused significant damage when it impacted the area on August 5.
Importance of Documentation
Rob Currall, Chief Building Official for the Town of Bluffton, emphasized the importance of accurately documenting any damage caused by Tropical Storm Debby. This is exceedingly significant in the event of future insurance claims due to similar weather incidents, akin to how car insurance claims function.
Emergency Permitting Guidelines
The Town issued the following guidelines regarding emergency permitting:
- For debris removal and minor repairs aimed at preventing any additional property damage or personal injury, permits are not required. In general, you do not need a permit for replacing any items that have been damaged by the tropical storm with items of a similar kind. Fixing minor water leaks that don’t involve structural, mechanical, or electrical systems would also not necessitate a permit.
- Emergency permits can be obtained without any fee.
- The emergency permit will be valid for 30 business days. Depending on the situation, the Town may extend or revoke this duration.
- If you dwell adjacent to a Highway Corridor (including Hwy. 46, 170, 278, or May River Road) or within the Bluffton Historic District, you would need to provide photographs of the property prior to the disaster while applying for a permit. Keep in mind that special guidelines, regulations, and codes can apply to repairs within the Historic District.
- If your property has endured structural damage, bring photographs of the damage for evaluation. Each situation will be assessed individually.
