Columbia’s Black Venus Collective Ignites Nightlife with Pulse of Diversity and Dance

Columbia’s New Groove: Black Venus Collective Dances into the Scene

Columbia, SC, is buzzing with excitement as a new movement hits the nightlife scene, and it’s all about celebrating diversity and making room for everyone to dance. The Black Venus Collective, which came to life in spring 2024, is all about providing “healthy escapism” for the city’s Black community. They aim to create vibrant spaces where people can let loose and enjoy themselves without any of the worries that often accompany clubbing.

A Night to Remember

On the evening of Friday, November 22, 2024, New Brookland Tavern transformed into a lively hub of music and dancing thanks to the magic of the Black Venus Collective. As the lights dimmed and the beats dropped, DJ Wandergirl (also known as Amber Glover) took to the turntables, bringing a mix of house and funk that had dancers moving and grooving. She pours her heart into every performance, seeing firsthand the joy, sweat, and liberation that come when people finally step onto the dance floor.

Creating Safe Spaces

What began as an idea to bring together alternative Black folks and people of color in Columbia has blossomed into a full-fledged celebration of identity and creativity. DJ Kris Love, Wandergirl’s partner in this venture, emphasizes the importance of safety in the clubbing experience. With his background in security at New Brookland Tavern, he knows all too well the challenges that can arise in a bustling nightlife environment. “I know what to look out for and make sure people come have a great time, express themselves, but also get home safe,” he shares passionately.

A Joyous Beginning

The Collective’s journey started with a leap of faith; their inaugural event on April 5 was dubbed an “All Black Affair.” Despite her nerves, Wandergirl was overjoyed when the turnout exceeded her expectations. “It was such a good turnout. And it like almost brought a tear to my eyes… people were dancing and enjoying themselves,” she recalls fondly. This event set the tone for what would become a series of unforgettable nights, anchored in connection, acceptance, and, of course, incredible music.

The Beat Goes On

At their recent show, attendees enjoyed not only a curated playlist of upbeat tracks but also a sense of community that can be hard to find. “Especially since the pandemic, a lot of people just haven’t been very interactive with each other,” notes Wandergirl. The atmosphere allowed folks to reconnect and simply be themselves, a rare opportunity that the Black Venus Collective strives to provide.

Looking Ahead

But the joy doesn’t stop here! The Collective is determined to continue expanding and evolving. Looking to the future, they plan to invite more Black DJs and artists to join their ranks, further enriching the musical landscape of Columbia. They’re eager to maintain new traditions, like their energizing Juneteenth dance party, and keep the themed nights rolling. “No matter the show or the venue, we will keep Columbia dancing,” asserts Wandergirl with a smile.

Join the Movement

For those craving a slice of that vibrant nightlife and a safe space to express themselves, following along with the Black Venus Collective on Instagram at @blackvenuscollective will keep you in the loop. This creative team of DJs isn’t just setting the stage for music; they’re writing a new chapter in Columbia’s nightlife filled with energy, connection, and freedom of expression.
