Zuri, Beloved Lion from Riverbanks Zoo Passes Away

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Alas, a heartbreaking loss for wildlife enthusiasts and the staff of Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia. Zuri, a celebrated male lion, widely revered and adored by visitors, has passed away. Zuri turned 20 just before his demise. He was a significant attraction at the Zoo ever since his arrival from Sedwick County Zoo in Kansas in 2005.

An Iconic Presence

Zuri, with his majestic mane and grace, had been a landmark presence at the zoo. His customary morning roars marked the beginning of a new day, offering a sense of comfort and familiarity to many, according to posts made by the zoo on social media. Though his absence will be deeply felt, his legacy and insurmountable contribution to the Zoo’s atmosphere will forever have a special place in the hearts of staff and visitors alike.

Legacy and Offspring

Zuri, over his lifetime, fathered 13 cubs, making a significant contribution to the population of African lions. Consequently, even though his physical presence will not grace the zoo anymore, his lineage continues to live on.

Two of his companions, lionesses named Thabisa and Lindelani, will soon return to their habitat for public viewing post Zuri’s death. They were kept close to Zuri during his care.

Tributes and Memories

Visitors to the zoo utilized social media platforms to express their sorrow and share their fond memories of the departed lion. Among the comments, one visitor said, “Zuri lived up to his name which means ‘Beautiful.’ He was indeed a beautiful lion. May he rest in peace.” Another shared, “He was truly a beautiful and vocal lion. My family and I will miss Zuri and his roars.”

A Testament to Exceptional Care

Zuri’s long life is an attestation to the care he received from the Riverbanks Zoo staff. As the zoo celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, Zuri’s long and healthy life stands as one of the many accomplishments of the institution.
