Irmo, SC – A Joyful Farewell to a Beloved Educator

Friends and family members are coming together to celebrate the life of Flora Kathryn, a dedicated educator who touched countless lives throughout her long and fulfilling career. Flora, who was born on June 14, 1943, in the quaint Hebron Community of Williamsburg County, made her mark in the hearts of many from the moment she stepped into the classroom. Her memorial service is set to take place on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at the Union United Methodist Church in Irmo, SC.

A Life Well-Lived

Flora was the beloved daughter of Annie Mae DuBose and Robert Clarence Kennedy. She graduated from Hebron High School and went on to attend Columbia College, setting the stage for a life devoted to education. After completing her studies, Flora embarked on her teaching journey, beginning her career in Florence, SC. However, it wasn’t long before she found her home in the Lexington 5 School District, where her impact would be profoundly felt.

Her career in education spanned several decades, culminating in her role as Principal at Harbison West Elementary School, a position she held until her retirement in 1999. Known affectionately as “Flor Kathryn” by her family and friends, she was a favorable figure among students, parents, fellow educators, and administrators alike. Her knack for making people laugh and fostering connections within the Lexington 5 community made her a cherished leader.

The Heart of the Community

Flora’s commitment to education extended beyond the classroom. She actively participated in various civic organizations and was a dedicated member of the Union United Methodist Church. At the church, she engaged with the Joy Sunday School class, showcasing her heartfelt desire to connect with others. Flora’s influence arguably transcended her professional life, as her unwavering support and kindness crafted a close-knit environment for those around her.

A Family Gathered

Flora is survived by her loving first cousins: Mary Anne DuBose Douglas Lake, James Carlisle DuBose, Jr., and Judith Louise DuBose Tarleton, along with numerous other cousins who remember her fondly. While her parents and paternal grandparents predeceased her, her spirit continues to resonate within the hearts of her loved ones.

As the date approaches, those who knew and loved Flora are invited to the memorial service at Union United Methodist Church. Following the service, friends and family will gather in the Fellowship Hall to share memories, laughter, and stories of the impact Flora had on their lives. This time together will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a life well-lived and the joy Flora brought into the world.

Honoring Her Legacy

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Flora may consider making memorial contributions to Union United Methodist Church or The Lexington Community Hospice House. These gestures will not only commemorate Flora’s legacy but also contribute to the communities she loved.

Join the Irmo community in this heartfelt tribute to Flora Kathryn—a devoted educator, a loving family member, and a friend to everyone. May her memory live on through the smiles and laughter she inspired throughout her life.
