Our beloved bartender, Grant McCloskey, is making headlines as he prepares to leave the capital city after nearly a decade of shaking up the craft cocktail scene. The announcement came through a heartfelt social media post on September 6, and the news is definitely stirring emotions in the local community.
A Journey Through Cocktails
Grant McCloskey has made quite a name for himself in Columbia. He started behind the bar at Cafe Strudel in West Columbia back in 2016, and his journey since then has been nothing short of impressive. After a brief stint in Austin, Texas, he returned to take charge of the bar program at The Aristocrat. But it wasn’t until he helped open Ratio, a Peruvian small plates restaurant, alongside chef-owner Javier Uriarte, that McCloskey truly blossomed, proving his mettle during those tough pandemic times.
As McCloskey reflected on his experience, he noted, “It’s been such a cool opportunity to be a part of the cocktail scene in Columbia at the time that I’ve been here. I feel like when I got into craft cocktails at The Aristocrat and Ratio, it felt like a really cool time for Columbia’s bar scene.” His creations became synonymous with the city’s vibrant dining culture, captivating many locals and visitors alike.
A New Chapter Awaits
Now, as he prepares to embark on a new adventure in Philadelphia, McCloskey expressed excitement about the challenges ahead. He shared, “I’m excited because it’s another challenge, it’s another opportunity to see where my ceiling is.” Departing from the warm embrace of Columbia at a time when our city’s bar scene is evolving just adds to the mix of bittersweet emotions.
His journey also took him recently to The Hollow, an upscale Vista restaurant where he played a vital role in setting up its cocktail program. Owner Chris Fitz praised McCloskey’s contributions, stating, “He really helped drive this city in that direction.” It’s clear that McCloskey’s presence will be greatly missed, both in the establishment and among the many connections he has fostered throughout the local service community.

McCloskey isn’t just leaving behind a career filled with accolades; he’s parting ways with countless memories and friendships. Over the years, he has participated in a myriad of local events—including the yearly Columbia Food & Wine Festival—where he dazzled attendees with his cocktail craftsmanship.
