In an effort to combat breast cancer, the South Carolina Department of Public Health in conjunction with the Beaufort County Health Department is hosting an event offering free breast cancer screenings, mammograms and cervical checks to qualified women.
The health initiative will take place on Monday, July 29, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Beaufort County Health Department located at 601 Wilmington Street. To schedule an appointment for these free health services, individuals are urged to call 843-792-0878.
To qualify for a free mammogram through the Best Chance Network, women must be between the ages of 21 to 64 and either have no insurance coverage or a high insurance deductible. These criteria seek to ensure that the women who are most at risk have access to this potentially life-saving service.
According to recent reports, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in South Carolina and serves as the second most common cause for cancer-related death. Timely mammograms can detect breast cancer before signs or symptoms become evident. Notably, breast cancer is usually treatable if detected early, underscoring the importance of regular screenings such as those being offered by the health departments.
By hosting this event, the South Carolina Department of Public Health and the Beaufort County Health Department aim to raise awareness about the importance of early detection in fighting breast cancer, while providing critical health services to those who might otherwise not afford them. While this event is an important step, it illustrates the ongoing need for accessible healthcare and timely cancer screenings in South Carolina and beyond.
