Hundreds of Beaufort County citizens are set to participate in the eighth annual Walk for Water, a fundraising event scheduled for September aimed at addressing the global water crisis. Registration opened recently for the walks on September 14 at Live Oaks Park in Port Royal and Sept. 21 at Wright Family Park in Bluffton.
Last year’s walk saw historic participation numbers, with more than 700 walkers joining from across the region and organizers hope to see a similar turnout again this year.
The event is expected to draw in an estimated 1000 walkers, which could see a record-breaking amount of $100,000 raised towards providing safe, clean water.
Events committee chair, Robert Lasher noted, “The money the walk raises, makes a life-changing difference for generations in communities around the world. As little as $50 provides one person ongoing access to safe, clean water.”
All proceeds from the walk will go to Water Mission, a non-profit Christian engineering organization based out of Charleston that constructs safe water solutions in developing countries and disaster-stricken areas.
Participants are urged to carry a bucket of water for a portion of the three-mile walk to symbolize the daily struggle that millions of women and children face in developing countries as they collect often-contaminated water. It’s important to note that inadequate water sources, according to Water Mission, result in one death every 37 seconds globally from water-related illnesses. The event aims to raise awareness about these issues.
Registration is currently open on the Walk for Water website. The fee for adults aged 18 and older is $25, youths from 5 to 17 years old can register for $10, and children 4 and younger register for free. Registrants can also avail of a $5 discount by using the code EARLYBIRD if they register by September 4. All participants receive a T-shirt and prefered sizes can be guaranteed to those who register by August 13.
For those interested, a limited-time matching gift donation of up to $10,000 means your registration could have twice the impact.
