In a significant milestone for the historic town of Port Royal, a public library opened its doors for the first time this week. This Beaufort County community, which dates back 462 years, celebrated the new addition which is set to become a center for education and local interaction.
The town of Port Royal currently hosts over 16,000 residents, many of whom have already begun to frequent the new library, eager to explore its facilities and resources.
Amanda Dickman, Beaufort County Library Director, expressed the importance of the library as a community hub, stating that it will be “a place where people feel safe and heard and seen and valued” as they interact with various resources.
Visitors can access a comprehensive selection of books and movies, alongside a range of amenities such as free Wi-Fi, public computers, a fax and a scan machine. The library also houses a meeting room and a study room to cater to the diverse needs of the growing community.
“It’s a place for kids. It’s a place for adults.” According to Dickman, the library is meant to inspire individuals to explore their interests or embark on new adventures, whether through reading books or online resources.
The public library will officially commemorate its opening on Saturday, Aug. 24. The festivities will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, complete with a story-time event and refreshments for all attendees.
