Impersonators Posing as Law Enforcement Officers, Beaufort Co. Sheriff’s Office Warns

– BEAUFORT COUNTY, South Carolina – The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to the local community after receiving reports of individuals fraudulently posing as law enforcement officers. Alerting the public to this scam, authorities advised residents to maintain vigilance.

Over the past week, several members of the community reported receiving calls from people claiming to represent the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. These imposters were seeking payment for fines or penalties related to missed jury duty or unfulfilled legal obligations, the sheriff’s office noted.

Sheriff’s Office Clarifies No Phone Call Payment Requests

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that it does not solicit payment for fines and penalties over the telephone concerning any criminal matter. Residents were reminded to err on the side of caution, especially when uncertain about the authenticity of such calls.

The Sheriff’s Office stressed the importance of not providing any personal or banking information to callers with whom one does not have an established relationship. They also urged residents to hang up immediately should they receive such a call.

“If you are unsure about the legitimacy of the call, please hang up and contact our office,” the spokespeople directed. Community residents were advised to ask the caller for a callback number and then verify it with the Sheriff’s office.

Rise in Scam Activities

This scam is just one in a rising number of fraudulent activities occurring nationwide, many of which involve perpetrators impersonating law enforcement officials or other trusted public servants. The exact number of people affected by this scam in Beaufort County is currently unknown. Local authorities are urging residents to report any suspicious calls to the Sheriff’s Office for investigation.

As investigations continue into these potentially dangerous scams, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office encouraged all community members to stay vigilant and remain knowledgeable about these fraud attempts to better protect themselves and their loved ones.
