Columbia, SC – On a cool evening bathed in the glow of neon lights, locals gathered at Bar None in Five Points to celebrate a remarkable milestone: their 30th anniversary! It was a night filled with laughter, cold beers, and a sense of community that makes this bar a cherished local gem.

As the clock struck 3 p.m. on December 12, patrons began to fill the spacious bar. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, reminiscent of the good ol’ days. A wonderful blend of old and new faces flocked in, forming new friendships and rekindling old ones. If you remember the lyrics, “where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came,” then you’d understand the spirit flowing through the air at Bar None.

A Bar with Family Ties

The brainchild of owner Marty Dreesen and his business partner, Dan Bliek, Bar None first opened its doors in 1994. Back then, Bill Clinton was settling into his presidency, gas was just $1.11 a gallon, and a frosty mug could be yours for around $2.50!

“We wanted to create a no-frills place, with good beer and solid conversations,” said Dreesen, who was spotted behind the bar, serving customers with a smile. “I grew up in the bar business; my parents ran a place called The Lazy B Saloon in Nebraska. I wanted to recreate that neighborhood feel, and I believe we’ve done just that here.”

A True Neighborhood Hub

And what a neighborhood hub it has become! Regulars like Ryan Bessinger have made Bar None a part of their lives for decades. “This place is special. After twenty years of coming here, I can say that I know so many faces, and it feels like family,” he said. That spirit of belonging is undeniable. Just a few minutes inside, and you can overhear folks discussing everything from local sports to the latest in politics.

Marty’s wife, Barbara—lovingly called Babs—was in charge of decorating for the anniversary party. “It’s always a delight to see people come together here. We discuss all sorts of topics, and even when we disagree, it’s absolutely fine because there’s a mutual respect,” Babs said, helping hang balloons and streamers to add to the festive mood.

Where Employees Become Family

From the bartenders to the kitchen staff, the sense of family extends well beyond the customers. Longtime employee Josh Brannon shared his thoughts, “I’ve been here working for twenty-four years now. We have seen our share of changes, but one thing remains the same: we’re a family, and our customers are part of that family too.”

And it’s true! Bartender William Steel, who joined the Bar None team about a year and a half ago, also felt the warmth that permeates the establishment. “I was a fan first before I became an employee. The Dreesens treat us like family, and I love the late-night fun! It’s all part of the experience.”

Overcoming Challenges Together

Of course, running a bar comes with its challenges. Dreesen reflected on how Bar None has weathered numerous changes, from strict new insurance laws to the COVID-19 pandemic that hit hard in 2020. Yet, through it all, the mission remains clear: to foster a space for camaraderie.

“One of my hopes is that Bar None stays true to itself, no matter who is running it in the future,” Dreesen shared. “For now, all I want is to keep this place as a friendly spot to share a cold drink, chat with friends, and maybe even play a game of shuffleboard.”
