Adorable baby Tammar wallaby peeking out from mother's pouch

News Summary

Columbia’s Riverbanks Zoo welcomes a new baby Tammar wallaby, whose journey from jellybean-sized joey to a playful marsupial has begun. The cute joey, born recently, is already peeking out of its mother’s pouch, creating excitement among visitors. As it grows and starts to explore its habitat, guests are encouraged to visit the zoo to witness this heartwarming moment and enjoy the beauty of animal life.

Exciting News from Columbia: A New Baby Tammar Wallaby is Here!

Columbia, get ready to meet the newest member of the Riverbanks Zoo family! On Wednesday, a tiny baby Tammar wallaby made its grand debut, and it’s already stealing hearts left and right. This adorable little joey was seen curiously peeking out from its mother’s cozy pouch, and visitors couldn’t be more excited!

A Jellybean-Sized Wonder

Can you imagine? This little one was born the size of a jellybean! That’s right—a tiny bundle of joy that has been growing and developing inside its mother’s pouch for the past few months. Tammar wallabies are known for their incredible journey from birth to the outside world, and this little joey is right on schedule.

Peeking Out at Four Months

Typically, young wallabies start to poke their heads out of the pouch around four months old, and this little one is just hitting that milestone. Over the next few weeks, we can expect to see it take short trips outside the pouch, but don’t worry—it will stay close to its mother during these explorations.

Growing Up Fast!

As the joey continues to grow, it will develop more fur, adding to its cuteness factor! In approximately nine months, it will spend most of its time hopping around outside the pouch. And guess what? It won’t be fully weaned until it reaches about eleven months old, so there’s still plenty of time for it to enjoy the nurturing care of its mom.

From Cherry to Cuddle Buddy

Just like other Tammar wallabies, this little joey started life the size of a cherry. These little marsupials spend about eight months in the pouch, developing before they begin to munch on solid food. It’s amazing to think about how they grow during this time, and not just in size!

Meet the Parents

Meet the proud parents, Simone and Bandit, who made their way to Riverbanks Zoo in 2023. Their arrival was part of a larger effort by the zoo to expand its Tammar wallaby family, and now we get to witness this adorable chapter unfold! Isn’t it lovely to see the joy that animal husbandry can bring?

Get Ready to Visit!

Zoo officials are eagerly encouraging guests to come visit the kangaroo walkabout where the little marsupial will be growing up. What a fantastic opportunity to watch this baby wallaby as it explores its habitat and learns about the world around it! These little moments make a visit to the zoo oh-so-special.

Be a Part of the Journey!

So, what are you waiting for? Don’t miss the chance to witness this unique moment in the joey’s journey. As it hops around and experiences the world with its mom, you’ll be delighted by its charming antics. Be sure to head over to Riverbanks Zoo soon to catch a glimpse of this precious baby Tammar wallaby—you won’t want to miss it!

In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, it’s moments like these that bring us joy and remind us of the beauty of life. Get ready for some cuteness overload, Columbia!
