Plentiful Sunshine Welcomes Participants to Midland’s Alzheimer’s Walk
Midland is buzzing with excitement as residents prepare for a heartfelt event this Saturday, October 19. The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is set to take place at the lovely Segra Park located in the vibrant BullStreet District.
If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s time to jump on board! Already, over 500 participants have registered, and the community is rallying together with a big goal in sight—raising $225,000 in Columbia for this vital cause. This annual walk aims to bring awareness to a disease that affects nearly 7 million Americans and is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. That’s a staggering number!
Understanding Alzheimer’s Impact
Alzheimer’s is not just a number; it’s a reality for many families. Here in South Carolina, more than 112,500 individuals are diagnosed with the disease, and around 219,000 people take on the role of caregivers. These statistics highlight the urgent need for community support and research into better treatments and ultimately a cure.
A Special Start with the Promise Garden Ceremony
The day will kick off with an emotional Promise Garden Ceremony, setting the tone for the event. Picture this: participants walking along the two-mile route, proudly carrying bright, colorful flowers, each representing a different personal connection to Alzheimer’s. This poignant experience signifies our unity in the fight against this disease. It’s a moment that really encapsulates hope and remembrance all at once.
“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s,” shares Ashton Houghton, the Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association, South Carolina Chapter. “There are now treatments that can change the course of the disease.” This is incredibly encouraging news for families affected by dementia! Everyone joining this walk plays an essential role in supporting families currently navigating through this challenging journey.
Why Your Participation Matters
You may wonder how attending one walk can make a difference. Well, every step taken and every dollar raised will directly fund the support needed for families facing dementia while advancing risks to find cutting-edge treatments. It is heartening to think that by being a part of this event, we can contribute to something much larger than ourselves.
“Together, we can help provide vital support for families facing dementia today while also funding research toward more treatments and ultimately an end to the disease,” continues Ashton. Isn’t that an inspiring thought? Knowing that your participation could potentially bring us closer to finding a cure is motivating!
