In recent news, Alex Quillen, an alumnus of Irmo High School, has been named the new head coach of the varsity basketball team. The official announcement was made by officials with Lexington-Richland School District Five on Wednesday. Quillen will now be stepping in to replace the renowned coach Tim Whipple, widely recognized for his significant contributions to the school over his 40-year tenure, including securing 11 state titles.
As an Irmo graduate, Quillen has intimate knowledge of the school’s illustrious basketball program. His career at Irmo saw him contribute to two state championship wins in 2011 and 2013 while a student of the institution. Later, he served as the JV coach and assistant varsity coach before ascending the ranks to his current position.
Reflecting on his appointment, Quillen said, “I am honored to have the opportunity to take over the Irmo High School basketball program. This is and always has been a dream job for me. Being an Irmo graduate, I have seen first-hand how amazing this community can be and how special this basketball program is.”
Alex Quillen committed to upholding the high standards set by his predecessor, stating his ambitions for the team’s future, “We want to win at the highest level and prepare these young men to be successful on and off the floor. I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence we have here at Irmo.”
The school district officials are delighted with the appointment, given that Quillen’s experience as a student, player, and coach places him in a strong position to have a positive impact on the team. His tremendous passion for the game and dedication to player development is anticipated to usher in the next chapter of success for the Irmo High School Basketball program.
Coach Quillen’s appointment offers a fresh perspective to the already successful program and lays the foundation for the continuation of impressive athletic achievement at Irmo High School.
