Historic Church to Relocate Due to Expanding Hilton Head Island Airport

The St. James Baptist Church on Hilton Head Island, which has stood in its current location for nearly 140 years, is set to relocate following years of negotiations and delays. Growing safety concerns ensuing from the expanding airport, whose runway now encroaches upon the church, have led to the decision to move the historic Black church.

Dangers of Airport Proximity

The necessity for relocation became clear in 2018 when an extension of the airport’s runway brought the church premises within its runway protection zone. Defined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), this zone serves to safeguard people and property on the ground in case of an accident during a plane’s landing or takeoff. The new safety measures mandated the church’s movement from its present site.

The Road to Relocation

Despite consensus among church leaders about five years ago to relocate as an opportunity for a newer, safer place of worship, the project faced numerous hurdles. A lack of priority from officials coupled with intermittent disagreements between Beaufort County and the Town of Hilton Head Island resulted in repeated delays.

However, recent developments, including state funding and an increased sense of urgency, have revitalized the church’s relocation efforts. While there are still obstacles to navigate, particularly the estimated $10 million price tag for the move and construction, the recent progress has given church leaders and project organizers renewed optimism for the future home of the St. James Baptist Church.

Funding and Future Plans

Republican state Sen. Tom Davis earlier this year secured $4 million from the state budget to assist the relocation. Additional funding will hopefully come from Beaufort County, the Town of Hilton Head Island, and the FAA. As of now, the new church facility, a nearby fellowship hall, and the historic Cherry Hill Schoolhouse, which the church wishes to bring along, are planned to be constructed on a five-acre, town-owned property adjacent to Union Cemetery Road.

Conclusion

Despite facing many challenges over the past years, the determination and perseverance to protect the congregation pave the way for a new chapter in St. James Baptist Church’s history. The relocation provides an opportunity to create a place of worship that not only continues to serve its historic significance but also caters to the needs of the modern community.
