WEST COLUMBIA – A unique gathering is set to take place in West Columbia this month, turning the spotlight on the technology-driven future of agriculture. The South Carolina Agriculture Technology and Business Forum, a first of its kind event, is scheduled for March 20 at the Phillips Market Center. This free event aims to unite key stakeholders in South Carolina’s crop and livestock sectors to share insights on current trends and discuss emerging challenges.

Fostering Connections and Shaping the Future

Organized by renowned entities including the Clemson Center for Agricultural Technology, South Carolina State University, and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, among others, the forum promises in-depth dialogues on economic considerations, sustainability challenges, technological advancements, and opportunities in fruit and vegetable farming.

Innovation and Environment at The Heart

One of the central themes scheduled to be discussed is the role of technology and connectivity in modern agricultural practices. Conversations will recognize the importance of broadband development in rural regions, the hurdles in adopting new technologies, and the need for research to stay ahead of the curve. In addition to this, topics such as economic development, farm valuation, and farmland zoning will be explored.

Representatives from the South Carolina Research Authority and the South Carolina Conservation Bank will present lunchtime talks while members from the South Carolina Department of Agriculture’s Agribusiness and Economic Development teams will bring the meeting to a close discussing economic development support measures being implemented in the state.

Addressing Sustainability

Sustainability issues are also set to play a significant part in the event’s agenda. Regulatory conditions, environmental concerns, water use, and renewable fuels will be key discussion points. Other emerging concerns such as carbon markets, regenerative agriculture, and on-farm resiliency will also be explored if time allows.

Fruit & Vegetable Opportunities

Another panel discussion, led by Ronnie Summers, CEO of Palmetto Agribusiness Council, will address fruit and vegetable opportunities. The interplay between distribution, market access, production needs, community packing, and emerging technologies will be a crucial topic during this discussion.

An Opportunity for Collaboration

The 2024 South Carolina Agriculture Technology and Business Forum is more than just an opportunity to network. It’s a platform for collaboration. Through the exchange of ideas and experience, research institutions and agribusiness stakeholders can address the challenges and opportunities presented by an increasingly technologically-driven agricultural sector, paving the way for a sustainable future for South Carolina’s agribusiness community.
