Tragic Incident on Bluff Road: Arrest Made in Hit and Run Case

Columbia, S.C. — The community is in shock after a tragic incident that occurred earlier this month along Bluff Road. This past Monday, police made an arrest in connection with the death of a young man who was struck while walking along the road.

Details of the Incident

On October 7, 22-year-old Xavier Jackson was walking eastbound along the 3400 block of Bluff Road when he was hit by a pickup truck. The area is just a mile away from the I-77 exit, and it seems like it was just an ordinary day when everything changed in an instant. Sadly, Jackson’s body was discovered the following morning by individuals working in the area, leading to an immediate investigation by local authorities.

Suspect Arrested

Columbia Police have since arrested 40-year-old James Gilmore, charging him with hit and run resulting in death, as well as failure to provide information and render aid. According to investigators, Guimore drove away from the scene without even trying to help Jackson or informing police about what had happened.

Eyewitness Accounts

Witnesses reported seeing a pickup truck veer off the road on the day of the accident, but it wasn’t until after the tragedy that the full scope of the incident began to unfold. Investigators located significant evidence at the scene and later found Gilmore’s pickup truck close to the site of the collision on the same day. It’s hard to imagine that someone could leave a person in such a critical condition without offering any assistance.

Driving Under Suspension

As if this situation wasn’t distressing enough, Columbia Police also disclosed that at the time of the collision, Gilmore was driving with a suspended license and without insurance. This raises some eyebrows and poses the question: how safe are our roads when individuals disregard driving regulations?

Community Response

This situation has understandably shaken the Columbia community. Many people are talking, expressing their sorrow over the loss of a young life and their disbelief over the circumstances surrounding it. The outpouring of support for Jackson’s family has been heartwarming, showcasing just how close-knit and caring this community truly is.

The Aftermath

Following his arrest, Gilmore was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where he will await further legal proceedings. Community members are hoping for justice to be served in what many consider a senseless tragedy. As we come to grips with this devastating event, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and being accountable for our actions behind the wheel.

From all of us in Columbia, our thoughts are with Xavier Jackson’s family during this incredibly painful time. We can only hope that they find some peace amidst this unbearable loss. As for the community, let’s continue to support one another and push for a safer environment on our roads.
