Sunny Days and Supportive Spirits in Sumter

If you’ve stepped outside in Sumter lately, you’ve likely noticed the beautiful and warm weather we’ve been having. With a high of 83°F and gentle winds blowing in from the southwest, it’s hard not to feel the positive energy in the air. From morning until night, those clear skies are just begging for people to get out and enjoy the sunshine!

On this sunny day, not just the weather shone brightly but also the spirit of community here in Sumter. In a heartfelt gesture, the Jim Hudson Foundation held a special event to mark the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The foundation’s mission is clear: to raise awareness and provide support for breast cancer prevention and education. As part of their commitment, they graciously presented a donation of $25,000 to the Prisma Health Midlands Foundation and Tuomey Hospital.

A Focus on Prevention and Early Detection

This generous contribution is earmarked for a significant purpose: the purchase of a brand new, state-of-the-art 3D mammography machine. This advanced technology will enhance the facility’s capacity to provide screening and diagnostic services, which is crucial since breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the Midlands and the rest of the United States. As Keith Hudson stated during the event, “Approximately one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer at some point in her life.”

The Hudson family, including Jim, Keith, and Ken, gathered to share their support for this impactful initiative. Together with their dedicated team of over 900 employees, this occasion reflected a united front against a disease that affects so many lives. And it’s not just about the machines; this donation also facilitates support items and educational materials for patients, ensuring they feel informed and empowered in their health journeys.

The Role of Prisma Health Breast Center

The Prisma Health Breast Center is a critical part of our community, recognized as the largest provider of breast imaging services in the Midlands, performing an impressive 40,000 mammograms each year. In fact, they were the very first program in South Carolina to receive full accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. This accreditation helps assure patients that they will receive comprehensive care from an interdisciplinary team. It covers everything from treatment options to patient support like nurse navigators and breast cancer conferences.

But that’s not all! The Breast Center also made history by launching the first mobile mammography unit in South Carolina back in 1988, paving the way for greater accessibility to crucial screening services.
