Parents, Teachers, and Candidates Gather for Lexington-Richland School Board Forum

IRMO, S.C. — This past Tuesday evening, a lively crowd gathered at the Lexington-Richland Five forum, where dozens of parents, teachers, students, and community members came together for an important discussion about the upcoming school board elections. With votes scheduled for November, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of urgency and excitement as the five candidates showcased their ideas and platforms for the Board of Education.

Meet the Candidates

Among the candidates vying for one of the three open seats on the Lexington Richland School District Five school board are a diverse group of individuals: a salesman, a cyber security business owner, an existing school board member, a former school board member, and a teacher from USC School of Music. Each candidate brings their unique perspectives and experiences, hoping to resonate with voters and bring positive changes to local schools.

Top Issues in Focus

As the evening progressed, it became clear that a few issues were at the forefront of the candidates’ campaigns. Teacher recruitment and retention emerged as a critical concern, with candidates Scott Herring and Catherine Huddle highlighting its significance during their discussions. “I’m really going to be focused on recruiting and retaining teachers,” Herring noted earnestly, sharing how this issue has affected his family personally. Huddle echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how financial support plays a pivotal role in compensating teachers properly and funding essential programs. “The money makes a big difference,” she explained.

Another candidate, Ken Loveless, chimed in, acknowledging that teacher compensation and school infrastructure are also urgent matters that need attention. Drawing from his past experience on the board, he mentioned, “We decided to take some action and replace a failing building over there.” This type of proactive approach seems to resonate well among attendees at the forum.

Safety Takes Center Stage

As discussions continued, candidates Jason Baynham and Mike Ward focused on the pressing issue of school safety. They passionately argued for the importance of enhancing safety measures within schools. “There are systems that exist that allow us to protect the doors, the perimeters of the schools,” Ward stated during his pitch. Baynham added, “We need to be open and transparent on all projects, especially involving taxpayer resources. We must focus on the safety of all our students and staff.” Their commitment to creating a secure learning environment resonated with many parents in the audience.

Supporting Teachers

When asked how they plan to support teachers better, Loveless and Huddle emphasized the importance of fair pay for educators. Meanwhile, Herring proposed a strategy to regularly seek teacher input, which he believes would give them a sense of certainty regarding their job locations. On the other hand, Baynham and Ward discussed the idea of easing the workload on teachers by eliminating unnecessary busy work, which may help educators focus more on their students.

Mark Your Calendars

As the discussion wrapped up, it was evident that each candidate was earnest about making a difference in the Lexington-Richland School District. With election day just around the corner on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, the community is encouraged to stay engaged and informed. As candidates continue to outline their visions for education, it’s clear that the support of parents, teachers, and community members will be vital in shaping the future of local schools.
