Columbia Gears Up for the Second Annual SC Horror Convention

As the leaves start to turn and the air gets a hint of autumn, the city of Columbia is thrilled to announce that the much-anticipated SC Horror Convention is back! This year’s event, cleverly titled “The Sequel,” promises to be even bigger and better. Mark your calendars for September 14 and get ready for a weekend filled with thrills, chills, and some good old-fashioned fun.

What’s in Store

The inaugural SC Horror Convention last year welcomed an excited crowd of 3,500 horror fans to the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. This year’s event is set to be a blast with an expanded floor plan featuring 175 artisanal vendors, celebrity panels, and an array of engaging activities for all ages. Whether you’re a horror aficionado or just looking to enjoy a unique weekend, there’s something for everyone!

J Moulton, the mastermind behind Moulton Conventions, who has been planning fan conventions across New England, couldn’t help but bring his creative touch to Columbia. Originally hesitant to take on another convention, he was inspired by the warm reception he received in the community. “I told myself I’d never do a convention again,” he muses. “But now, I want to give them something great!”

A Fan-Centric Experience

Moulton knows firsthand just how important it is for fans to have an event that truly resonates with them. “When Spirit Halloween opens, people flock to it,” he pointed out. The SC Horror Convention fills a vital space in Columbia’s fandom scene, drawing in people who love all things spooky.

Over the weekend, attendees can take part in all-ages costume contests, enjoy a live haunt from the beloved Dark Castle Haunted Attractions, and dance the night away at the afterparty hosted at the charming Art Bar. There’s also a chance to meet and greet horror legends such as Dacre Stoker, the author of “Dracul,” actor Dave Sheridan from “Scary Movie,” and director Felissa Rose of “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2.”

Affordable Fun for Everyone

One of the most appealing aspects of the SC Horror Convention is its affordability. Adult weekend passes are just $20, with single-day options available for only $13. “Everybody can’t go to shows for fear of spending their rent or mortgage money,” Moulton said, emphasizing his commitment to making the convention accessible to a wider audience. Even children can join in the fun! Kid’s passes are just $5 or free with the purchase of an adult pass, offering entry to exciting “Children of the Con” activities like trick-or-treat bag decorating and mask-making.

A Family-Friendly Atmosphere

This isn’t just any horror show! Moulton insists that “it doesn’t have to be in-your-face, blood, guts and gore scary.” The convention is designed to be a family-friendly environment where learning and laughter collide to create an epic weekend event. He wants everyone to have a chance to experience the fun, regardless of age—or how much of a horror buff they may be!

Embracing Diversity and Inclusion

This year, while the majority of Columbia welcomes their spine-chilling celebration with open arms, Moulton has faced some opposition. “We get some hate mail — we’re evil and we’re going to hell,” he shared lightheartedly. However, he remains steadfast in his mission to create an inclusive atmosphere. “We’re doing it with love, acceptance, and so much passion for the genre,” he reiterated. After all, at its core, it’s simply a festive Halloween party filled with creativity and joy.
