Soulful saxophonist and dentist, Phillip “Doc” Martin, set to jazz up the weekend at Chayz Lounge, Meeting Street.

Lexington, June 27, 2024: Artists often adorn nicknames reflective of their artistry or marketing tactics, but for Phillip ‘Doc’ Martin, fuelling his saxophone performances with echoes of his dentistry day job, the nickname plays out beyond the stage. The crowd at Chayz Lounge on Meeting Street is in for a treat this Saturday as this emblem of duality graces the stage.

Martin’s Musical Journey So Far

Ever since the release of his debut – Saxappeal in 2003, ‘Doc’ has been carving a niche for himself in the world of saxophone, enchanting audiences across platforms from Blues Alley in D.C., the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, to the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival. ‘Doc’ has achieved massive airplay with his well-received tracks like “Deep Pockets” and “Realization” from his 2009 set.

His latest work, an EP titled ‘Christmas’, teases a soulful recasting of Christmas carols, probing beyond cliches. However, Martin’s distinction isn’t confined within the melodies; it stretches to the dental clinic in Washington, D.C. where he is a board-certified dentist.

Music and Medicine: Striking the Chord

The dual triumph of Martin, both as an accomplished saxophonist and a successful dentist, is indeed awe-inspiring. He reflects on his two diverse yet fulfilling careers, “My first love was always playing the sax, and I continue to strive to be the best sounding alto player you’ve ever heard. If it’s unheard of that a saxophone artist also wants to be the best dentist you’ve ever gone to, that’s a testament to the hard work I have put in so that I may enjoy these two amazing careers. In both worlds, success comes from working with incredible, dedicated people and developing inspiring, enduring relationships.”

He acknowledges his successful juggle between his passion and profession by naming his 2013 album ‘Good Day At Work’, a tribute to the synergies of being an artist and a dentist simultaneously. An iconic testament to his dual-world success is a picture in the packaging of his 2016 album, ‘Pocket Love’, in which Martin can be seen in his green scrubs and cap, fondly embracing his beloved alto sax.

‘Doc’ Is In: A Night not to Miss

Opt for Martin’s scintillating mix of smooth jazz and soulful grit at Chayz Lounge this Saturday. Although we can’t promise a lollipop at the end of the event, a night brimming with sublime saxophone melodies is assured.
