K9 Officer Coba to be Honored at Memorial Service, Governor McMaster to Attend

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A memorial service has been arranged by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) in honor of Coba, a K9 member who was fatally wounded during a felony warrant operation.

K9 Officer Coba Shot in Line of Duty

Coba was part of an operation team attempting to serve a felony warrant to a 37-year-old suspect, James Peterson, at a residence on Gravel Road. Upon confrontation in the hallway of the residence by Coba, the K9’s handler, and a Newberry County Sheriff’s Office deputy, Peterson fired at Coba. The K9 was immediately taken to an emergency veterinarian but succumbed to the injuries later the same day.

Memorial Service Details

The tribute to Coba will take place at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, located at 5400 Broad River Road, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19. South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster, has confirmed his attendance.

Officials have requested attendees to refrain from bringing personal pets to the service. However, law enforcement K9s are welcome to join the memorial.
