Irmo Police Department Hosts Catalytic Converter Prevention Event

IRMO, S.C.— The Community Services Division of the Irmo Police Department is slated to host a catalytic converter theft prevention event. Announced via a press release, the department states the event is aimed at community awareness and prevention of the rampant thefts that have plagued the U.S. in recent years.

Theft Prevention Event Details

The event will take place at the AAA Car Care Center on Lake Murray Boulevard on Saturday, June 15. The event starts at 8:30 a.m. and will continue through 3:30 p.m.

Catalytic Converter Kits

Participants will be provided with catalytic converter kits free of charge. The kits will be installed on-spot by the department’s officers. The objective is to curb the increasing trend of catalytic converter thefts in the country.

Why Catalytic Converters?

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the USA witnessed over 64,000 catalytic converter thefts in 2022 alone. Predominantly composed of precious metals such as rhodium, platinum, and palladium, catalytic converters are highly attractive to perpetrators. These metals hold substantial value and can be recycled and resold.

Deterrence of Catalytic Converter Thefts

Irmo PD suggests that permanently marking a catalytic converter can help deter theft. It emphasizes that this marked identity facilitates law enforcement’s efforts to track and identify stolen converters. It also warns potential scrap metal buyers to refrain from purchasing marked converters without proof of vehicle ownership.

Participation in Upcoming Event

Members of the community who are interested in participating in the event are encouraged to sign up. The sign-up link is available on the Irmo PD’s official webpage.

Anticipating a Positive Turnout

With this novel initiative, Irmo PD hopes to educate and equip the community with the necessary tools to avert catalytic converter thefts. By doing so, they aim to curb this growing national menace and safeguard the city of Irmo and its residents.
