Unexpected Rainfall Creates Challenges for Local Farms in Irmo

Irmo, SC – Unexpected rainfall has presented significant challenges for the farming industry in Irmo, specifically for the family-owned Heritage Fields Farm. The variable weather conditions have complicated the farm’s spring cropping plans and the typical farming operations.

The Impact of Mother Nature

As the winter harvest season winds down and spring approaches, rainfall has extensively dampened the grounds, making it challenging for farmers to cultivate the soil. “We cannot get in the ground right now to plow up because it has been so wet; Mother Nature controls everything,” expressed Dot Derrick, the mother of the farm owner.

Despite these conditions, Derrick’s son remains committed to his established agricultural plan. “He will put in the beds usually in the fall of the year for his spring stuff, just knowing that we don’t know what the weather will be,” Derrick added. She further stated, “he prefers it be dry than wet because he can control the water he puts on the plants.”

Commitment Despite Challenges

Regardless of the season or weather conditions, Heritage Fields Farm ensures that all their produce is nurtured with care and love. Haley Fickling, an employee at Heritage Fields Farm, echoed this sentiment. “It’s good shopping at a place like this because you get to meet someone, make a connection and get a tip on how to keep your flowers growing,” she said.

The unease of the unexpected rainfall indeed has posed a test for Heritage Fields Farm, compelling them to adapt their farming methods. However, their commitment to their customers and their crops remains unwavering despite the challenges. As boons and banes of nature tend to alternate, so too will the farm adapt and thrive with the times.
