COLUMBIA, S.C. – Holiday Spirit Shines Bright at Festival of Trees
On a delightful Friday evening, the charming city of Columbia came alive with holiday cheer as hundreds gathered near downtown for the Prisma Health Midlands Foundation’s annual Festival of Trees fundraiser. This beloved event not only marks the start of the holiday season but also aims to raise funds that directly support the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital Midlands.
Kickoff to Festive Fundraising
As the twinkling lights adorned the event, Katie Williams from the Prisma Health Midlands Foundation warmly welcomed attendees, expressing her excitement about the occasion. “Tonight is our Festival of Trees and donor celebration,” Williams said. “This is our signature fundraising event for Prisma Health Children’s Hospital Midlands, and it is the official kickoff of the holiday season!”
Williams highlighted the importance of the fundraiser, stating, “It’s because of events like this that we can help enhance patient care and fundraising and philanthropy within the community. We can have, not just the latest and greatest in treatments and technology, but also a lot of support programs for children.”
A Night of Giving
The event was filled with beautifully decorated trees, each one a unique creation donated by local businesses and community members. The trees weren’t just eye-catching decorations; they were part of the night’s exhilarating auction where attendees could bid on their favorite holiday masterpieces, contributing to a greater cause. This year, one of the notable contributors was the Beamer Family Foundation, which generously donated a whopping $50,000 to support the children’s hospital.
A Heartwarming Testimony
Among the crowd were the Priester family, who shared their heartfelt story about the critical role Prisma Children’s Hospital played in their lives. “When my son was just shy of two years old, he tragically fell in our swimming pool,” shared a visibly emotional Lindsey Priester. “He was in the PICU for about eight or nine days and then went to the standard floor for therapy. My son is now nine years old. He has no developmental delays whatsoever, and so we are just so blessed.”
Her husband, Tyler Priester, added a touching note: “You don’t know when you’re going to need the children’s hospital. We’re very fortunate to have it.” Their words echo the sentiments of many families in the community who have relied on the dedicated services offered at the hospital.
Innovative Care and Community Support
Dr. Jeff Holloway, a medical professional at Prisma Children’s Hospital, played a key role in the event. He explained his work at the hospital and the importance of community support for innovative services, such as the unique concussion clinic he runs. “It’s one of the few in the state, and it’s something that is a service where I can provide some services that patients don’t get otherwise,” he noted.
In addition to his medical role, Dr. Holloway also brings joy to young patients by portraying Buddy the Bear, the hospital’s beloved mascot. “Buddy the Bear is the mascot for the children’s hospital. We enjoy having him there to interact with the kids, teach them a little bit about the hospital and things they might expect,” he explained with a smile.

As the evening unfolded, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and gratitude. Organizers for this year’s fundraiser expressed their joy over the turnout, which exceeded expectations. They are incredibly thankful to everyone who continues to support the Prisma Health Midlands Foundation, allowing for so many positive changes in the lives of children in need.
