Columbia Community Unites for Annual "Souper" Event to Support Women's Shelter

COLUMBIA, S.C.: A Heartwarming Annual Tradition of Giving

As the chilly air of November settles in, the Columbia Women’s Shelter, Chick-Fil-A, and Eastminster Presbyterian Church come together for a truly special event known lovingly as the “Souper.” This annual gathering, which takes place just before Thanksgiving, is about much more than soup; it embodies a sense of community and the spirit of giving back to those in need.

What’s the “Souper” All About?

For the past 44 years, this partnership has served as the only fundraiser for the Columbia Women’s Shelter. Each year, the event aims to remind the community of the blessings they have. Lee Coggiola, a dedicated board member for the Women’s Shelter, explains, “We do this to help put into perspective what our neighbors in need are experiencing. Sometimes, a single medical issue can lead to someone losing their home. It’s important for folks to recognize that it’s often life situations beyond anyone’s control that can put them in this position.”

A Community United

The event isn’t just a simple soup gathering; it’s a celebration of cooperation and compassion. Senior Pastor of Eastminster Presbyterian, Brad Smith, highlights the importance of this mission. He says, “This is a team effort from folks across the community, including Chick-Fil-A, to come together and support the Women’s Shelter. As a church, we’re here to love and serve, and participating in the ‘Souper’ is just one more way for us to do just that.”

The Heart of the Matter

Since it opened its doors in the 1970s, the Columbia Women’s Shelter has been a beacon of hope for women facing tough times. The shelter is capable of housing around nine women at a time, and in addition to that, it features 17 transitional homes designed to help women get back on their feet. But the mission doesn’t stop there; the shelter also provides vital resources to empower these women.

More Than Just Fundraising

While the fundraiser has a significant financial aspect, it strikes a deeper chord for those in attendance. “It’s a reminder that there are countless individuals out there who find themselves in difficult situations, often through no fault of their own,” Coggiola adds. “Everyone deserves a safe place to stay, a feeling of comfort, and supportive people around them to encourage them to move forward in life.”
