Columbia’s Beloved Children’s Theatre Faces Uncertain Future
Columbia, SC – In a city known for its rich arts scene, the Columbia Children’s Theatre (CCT) has been a staple of joy and creativity for young audiences. However, the beloved theater organization is currently navigating through choppy waters due to a significant financial hurdle, making it crucial for the community to rally around them.
Founded in 2005 by the passionate duo of Jerry Stevenson and Jim Litzinger, CCT has blossomed into a cultural treasure over the past two decades. Stevenson recently issued a heartfelt plea to the members of the Columbia community, stating, “We’re putting out an urgent funding call. We need to raise around $50,000 by January 1, or we’re going to have to make some serious decisions about operations.” With a big fundraising target on the horizon, the clock is ticking, making it critical for supporters to step up.
Even though the amount may seem small when compared to the budget of a college football team, it’s vital for this nonprofit organization that survives on ticket sales and tuition fees. The need for funds has become all the more pressing after a series of unexpected challenges, including the need to relocate when their long-time home at the Richland Mall was sold for redevelopment in early 2023.
A Journey Through Difficult Times
After the sudden closure, CCT was forced to move quickly, establishing a base in the Brookland-Lakeview Empowerment Center in West Columbia. While this may have provided a temporary solution, the space still requires renovation to serve as a proper performance venue, putting more strain on the operation.
As Stevenson noted, “We incurred a significant financial burden” during the rushed relocation. With a reduced staff and limited resources, the theater’s full schedule of performances has been cut back. Now, instead of several-week runs, shows are often squeezed into just one or two days, making it more difficult to reach communities far and wide.
Creative Solutions in Challenging Times
Despite the obstacles, CCT has continued its mission of bringing the magic of theater to children and families in the Midlands region. Their engaging performances at libraries and community outreach programs have remained a highlight, even though these initiatives come with their own set of expenses.
It’s not all doom and gloom, as the theater has seen incredible successes in the past. For instance, a stripped-down adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” served as a meaningful conversation starter among teens grappling with life’s challenges. Moreover, alumni of CCT have been making waves in the local arts scene, proving that their time at the organization has paved the way for bright futures.
A Community United
A recent recognition as the 2022 Theatre of Distinction by the South Carolina Theatre Association was a testament to CCT’s impact, but without immediate funding support, the future remains uncertain. Stevenson emphasized the importance of community involvement, noting, “Without these funds, the future of CCT is uncertain.”
