South Carolina Women’s Basketball Dominates East Carolina

COLUMBIA — The South Carolina women’s basketball team showcased an impressive performance on Sunday afternoon, defeating East Carolina 95-44 in a game held at the Colonial Life Arena. The No. 1 ranked Gamecocks improved their record to 4-0, achieving their best first-quarter performance of the season with a commanding 9-0 start.

Team Effort Leads to Victory

Every player contributed to the win, as all 12 members of the Gamecocks roster scored. Leading the charge was Chloe Kitts, who recorded 14 points, marking her third double-digit scoring game this season. Freshman Joyce Edwards added 12 points, helping South Carolina dominate on the court. In total, five players scored 10 or more points during the match.

Defensive Challenges for East Carolina

The Pirates (2-2) began the game employing a 2-3 zone defense, but South Carolina swiftly navigated through their defense, creating easy scoring opportunities both in half-court plays and during fast breaks.

Injury Update on Tessa Johnson

Notably absent from the lineup was Tessa Johnson, who missed her second consecutive game due to an ongoing ankle injury sustained against NC State on November 10. A team spokesperson indicated Johnson is considered day to day. Her absence placed additional pressure on players such as Maddy McDaniel and Fulwiley to step up and contribute off the bench.

Upcoming Schedule

With this victory, Coach Dawn Staley and her team will wrap up their current home-game stretch, preparing to face Clemson in an away game on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET, which will be streamed live on ESPN2. Following the matchup against the Tigers, the Gamecocks will travel to Los Angeles for a game against UCLA on November 24 at 4 p.m. ET, available on FS1.

Looking Ahead

South Carolina’s next five games will be critical as they aim to maintain their perfect record. The performance against East Carolina not only demonstrated the depth of the roster but showcased the team’s ability to adapt in the absence of key players.

As the season progresses, the Gamecocks will look to continue leveraging their balanced scoring and tenacious defense, solidifying their status as a top contender in college women’s basketball.
