Big News for CIU
In even more exciting news, Columbia International University (CIU) has been buzzing with anticipation following a significant announcement! They’ve recently landed a blockbuster $328,000 grant from the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH). This funding is a huge win for CIU and its cutting-edge Biomedical Sciences program, and it’s all thanks to the hard work of Professor Dr. Jeong-Ho Kim.
Focusing on Health
So, what will this grant be used for, you ask? Dr. Kim and his talented students are gearing up to dive into some serious research over the next three years. Their mission? To discover new ways to help doctors treat metabolic disorders, especially conditions like diabetes, obesity, and even cancer. This research isn’t just any old study; it aims to provide significant insights into how our cells work, particularly when things go off track.
A Competitive Process
We should mention that getting this grant is no easy feat! The NIH is known for its rigorous application process, which involves intense peer reviews by scientific experts. Only the most innovative projects grab their attention. It’s an added badge of honor that CIU is the only private Christian university in the Southeast to snag an NIH AREA grant this year. Dr. Kim expressed his enthusiasm about this opportunity: “The results will provide significant insights into the processes involved in the maintenance of glucose homeostasis in humans, especially under pathological conditions,” he said. In other words, they’re looking to understand what happens to our bodies when glucose levels get out of whack, something incredibly important for those dealing with diabetes and other health issues.

But that’s not all—this grant also paves the way for undergraduate students to get their hands dirty in real research. Dr. Kim runs a fantastic summer program for students in Biomedical Sciences where they receive intensive training in Cell and Molecular Biology.
