COLUMBIA, S.C.: Celebrating Native American Heritage Month
Governor’s Proclamation Shines a Light on Native American Contributions
Hey there, folks! November is a special month here in South Carolina as Governor Henry McMaster has officially declared it Native American Heritage Month. This is more than just a proclamation; it’s a heartfelt recognition by the governor of the unique and significant contributions that Native Americans have made and continue to make in our beautiful Palmetto State.
A Time for Recognition
Joshua Shumak from the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs (CMA) expressed just how vital this month is. “It’s just a chance to *recognize* them and raise awareness because they make up such a small population in one of the fastest-growing states,” Shumak said. Isn’t it refreshing to see our leaders addressing such vital issues and engaging with Native tribes?
This month is dedicated to celebrating the rich cultural heritage and history of Native Americans, highlighting their existence and pivotal role in the communities across South Carolina. “We have people in communities in the state that have existed before the United States was even founded. It’s a *beautiful tapestry of culture* that goes back thousands of years!” exclaimed Shumak.
Meet the Tribes!
Did you know South Carolina is home to 10 recognized tribes and four state-recognized groups? That’s a lot of history right in our backyards! According to the CMA, around 11,000 individuals in our state identify as Native American – a **noteworthy community** that’s here and proud. “We are still here, and we want to let people know that we’re still here, and we’re really not going anywhere,” stated Chief Eric Pratt, who leads the Santee Indian Organization.
Struggles and Strength
However, it’s not all rainbows and sunshine. Chief Pratt points out some of the ongoing struggles faced by Native communities. Land, or rather the lack of it, is a huge issue. “Native Americans don’t have the land to grow their own crops. Big developments come in and wipe out what little farmland is left. This leads to *real challenges* for our people,” he lamented. It sounds like a crucial issue that needs our attention!
Contributions to Society
Even amidst challenges, Native Americans contribute significantly to South Carolina. “We have veterans from native tribes, and they serve in the army in *larger numbers* compared to any other group. They are community leaders in business and nonprofits, striving to create a better society for everyone,” Shumak added, reflecting on the resilience and strength of the native community.
Mark Your Calendars!
And here’s something neat: November 29th has been marked as South Carolina’s Native American Heritage Day. This day will serve as a reminder to all of us about the rich histories and futures that our Native communities hold!
So, whether you get involved in local events or simply take some time to appreciate the contributions of Native Americans in your area, let’s celebrate this important month together!

As we dive deeper into November, let’s carry these stories with us and recognize the vibrant Native American heritage that’s woven into the fabric of South Carolina. Together, we can celebrate and honor those who have paved the way and continue to inspire us with their rich traditions and unwavering spirit.
