COLUMBIA, S.C. – Recovery Efforts Following Hurricane Helene
It’s been a month since Hurricane Helene swept through South Carolina, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. FEMA’s Progress Report
In a recent press conference, FEMA Coordinator Brett Howard provided an update on the state’s recovery status, expressing that the rebuilding process is indeed progressing. “Right now, we have approved over $204 million for the survivors here in South Carolina,” Howard shared. He noted that this funding has already been allocated to over 4,000 applications, highlighting the extensive reach of their assistance.
Additionally, FEMA has established eight disaster recovery centers throughout South Carolina, where survivors can seek help and information. These centers have seen considerable foot traffic, with over 6,000 survivors utilizing the services offered. It’s a crucial step in ensuring that those affected have the support they need during this challenging time.
A Personal Touch
During a recent door-to-door initiative in Columbia, FEMA volunteers reached out to residents, taking the time to listen to their concerns and register them for assistance. One resident, Clayton, expressed his struggles with the impact of the storm. “I want to apply for it because I want to recover some of the monthly expenses that I had because of the disaster with the generator and the fuel and all the lost food,” Clayton shared, underscoring the personal toll the hurricane has taken on his daily life.
Encouraging Participation
FEMA spokesperson Tiana Suber emphasized that while they are pleased with the number of applications received so far, they know many more individuals and families may still be unaware of the assistance available to them. “You know, we are happy to see those numbers grow every single day. I think we are well over 200,000 people that have registered so far,” Suber stated, urging those in need to come forward and apply. Every application matters and can significantly impact a family’s recovery journey.
