Columbia, S.C. – This week marks a momentous occasion for C.A. Johnson High School as the school celebrates an impressive milestone—its 75th anniversary! Since its opening in 1949, C.A. Johnson has been a cornerstone in the community, not just for its students but also for its vibrant history that continues to inspire. The school is all set for a festive weekend filled with events, including a special homecoming parade and a football game against Allendale-Fairfax High School.
Sharon Hanks, an esteemed faculty member and proud alumni, couldn’t contain her excitement as she reflected on the school’s legacy. “We have so many people, with this rich history, that came out of Johnson. It’s hard to contain yourself when you’re talking about it. We just love the J!” she exclaimed. Hanks has seen the evolution of C.A. Johnson over the decades, but one thing that remains constant is the tight-knit community that surrounds the school.
Notable alumni have emerged from C.A. Johnson, such as former NFL player Mike Jones and Charles Bolden, who served as NASA administrator and astronaut. Both alumni are joining in the celebrations, bringing an added sense of pride to the occasion. It’s these connections and achievements that make alumni like Hanks cherish their time at C.A. Johnson.
As the principal of C.A. Johnson, Dr. Brenton Coe recognizes the importance of honoring the past while steering the school into the future. He believes it is vital to ensure that the history of C.A. Johnson is not just written in textbooks but is also shared and appreciated by the new generations of students. “A lot of times, we speak about the history and the impactful people that have graced the hallways here at C.A. Johnson High School, and we always put a strong focus on instruction,” Coe commented.
It’s not just the administrators who care deeply about the school’s heritage. Current students feel the weight and pride of being part of such a rich tradition. Senior Tyrek Smith expressed his thoughts on the school’s impact: “I just think that’s really wonderful. And it just means a lot knowing that something so historic to our history and people is still going strong to this day.” His words highlight the bond between past and present students, making the celebration feel all the more meaningful.
The highlight of the anniversary weekend will undoubtedly be the homecoming parade scheduled for Saturday. It promises to be a vibrant affair, showcasing school spirit and community pride. This event will feature not just current students and faculty, but also alumni who are returning to relive their youthful days.
After the parade, all eyes will turn to the football field as the Hornets take on Allendale-Fairfax High School. School spirit will be at its peak, with fans, alumni, and families coming together to cheer on the team.
As C.A. Johnson High School celebrates this incredible 75-year journey, there’s an undeniable sense of optimism for the future. The legacy built within its walls is one that will continue to guide future generations, as the school remains committed to fostering a strong community filled with excellence and respect. Hanks, who fondly remembers her own days as a student, encapsulated the spirit of C.A. Johnson, saying, “We were close knit, we had our student issues and stuff, but we still held onto what we knew. And what we knew was coming out of here and what had come out of here. So, we loved it.”
As the weekend of festivities draws near, alumni and community members eagerly prepare to celebrate a legacy that has enriched lives for the past 75 years.
